But the best zombie games do have an element of realism to them. In this instance, it could be in relation to graphics, world interaction, enemy AI, or crafting abilities.

All these factors play a role in the immersion of a game, and the more immersive a zombie game is, the better it is likely to be. Read on for the most realistic zombie games, and let us know if you agree in the comment section below.

dayz-gameplay-2940485 DayZ Gameplay

DayZ is a great place to start if you’re looking for realistic zombie survival games. This interactive game takes place in the aftermath of an apocalyptic undead outbreak in the fictional post-soviet Republic of Chernarus.

You start with basic clothing and equipment, and must search and scavenge your way to better equipment all while trying to avoid incoming attacks by zombies and other online players.

Survival isn’t easy, though. The realism of survival in DayZ accounts for food and water intake, blood levels, temperature, illnesses, and overall health. There is a LOT to monitor. But that’s what makes the game so good and what makes it one of the most realistic zombie games around.

Despite being originally released as an Arma 2 mod, DayZ has become a successful standalone successor since it was first released in 2018, and it continues to stand out as a must-play within the genre.

no-more-room-in-hell-gameplay-5011262 No More Room in Hell Gameplay

No More Room in Hell is an oldie, but it’s a goodie. Originally released in 2011, this first-person survival game is set during a zombie apocalypse and is heavily inspired by The Living Dead film series.

The game is slower-paced than your average zombie game, with slow movement, slow enemies, slow reloading and healing – basically, slow everything.

But this is what makes the game one of the most realistic zombie survival games available. In the event of an apocalyptic undead outbreak, the likelihood is that people will be fatigued by the constant fight for survival and demoralizing loss of loved ones, and won’t have the free-running energy levels seen in games such as Dying Light (no hate, I still love the Dying Light series).

This co-op horror game has multiple gameplay modes including objective-based, zombie waves, and outright survival. Realism in the game is added to by the lack of indicators in the HUD bar, fast stamina depletion, and (controversially) zombies of ALL ages.

Another great thing about No More Room in Hell is that you can download it for free on Steam.

state-of-decay-2-gameplay-5558106 State of Decay 2 Gameplay

State of Decay 2 is a game that has evolved a lot since it was first released in 2018. There are now 5 maps, a whole host of new weapons, new gameplay modes, and far less technical issues.

State of Decay 2 is a tough game to master but the rich open world, strong character development, and intricate survival elements will keep you hooked throughout. There is a strong sense of community survival, and you’ll have to work with other players if you want to stay alive. Scavenging for weapons and gear in abandoned buildings feels rewarding, and meaningful upgrades can regularly be found.

It should be noted that there is no PvP in State of Decay 2, and it is purely PvE. Personally, I prefer PvE and think that it allows the game to focus on realistic zombie interactions. If PvP is your thing, though, maybe this game isn’t for you.

Another great thing about the game is the mods. There are certain realism mods, such as the Brimstone and Romero mod, that make the game feel more realistic and/or more difficult. All in all, State of Decay 2 is easily one of the most realistic zombie survival games around, and well worth checking out before the third installment in the franchise is released.

project-zomboid-gameplay-3222248 Project Zomboid Gameplay

Initially, I wondered how immersive a zombie game could be from an isometric viewpoint. This was quickly quashed, though, when I started playing Project Zomboid. I was blown away by the levels of immersion, and this quickly became one of the most realistic zombie survival games I have ever played.

This is a top-down, sandbox survival game that thinks of everything. It’s not just about defeating enemy undead, you also have to factor in starvation, dehydration, depression, disease, loneliness, and fatigue.

There are four starting towns within Kentucky, each of them ridden with undead and abandoned buildings ready for scavenging. The game does little to help you, and there is no hand-holding to walk you through the early stages.

In fact, it is the difficulty of the game that makes it so incredibly rewarding and addicting. You must learn from your mistakes if you want to progress further on your next run.

There is tons of content in Project Zomboid, and the game has the ability to keep you hooked for 100s of hours.

days-gone-gameplay-9121738 Days Gone Gameplay

If you, like me, were put off by the negative reviews when Days Gone was first released, I implore you to rethink the decision to overlook this game.

Not only is this one of the most realistic zombie games ever made, it is one of the best games of the past decade and will go down as a classic in years to come.

Once the developers (Bend Studio) patched the many day 1 bugs, the true beauty and depth of the game came to the fore. With one of the most engaging stories in recent times, the level of immersion in Days Gone is amplified by the stunning graphics, realistic driving mechanics and player movement, and a real need to scavenge for supplies in order to survive.

It took a while for the protagonist, Deacon St John, to grow on me, but that’s partially because the dialogue is so believable and, in real life, you’re not gonna like everybody all the time. As the game goes on, though, players grow very attached to Deacon and you’ll no doubt be rooting for his survival by the end.

With multiple zombie types, horde locations, and infestation sites, there is a lot to be getting on with in Days Gone. It doesn’t seem to become repetitive, either, and this is the first game in years that inspired me to push for total completion.

If you want a real challenge, try completing the game on Hard difficulty. If that’s not enough, try the Survival Mode, though this is for masochists only.

What do you think are the most realistic zombie survival games? Do you agree with our list? Let us know in the comment section below!

The 5 Best Horror Games of 2023 to Play on Halloween https://blogofgames.com/the-5-best-horror-games-of-2023-to-play-on-halloween/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 14:14:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=251 Looking for a horror game to play this Halloween? Look no further. Here we’ve broken down the best horror games of 2023 for you to enjoy! Let us know in the comment section if you have any others to add to the list.

5. The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials Gameplay

Developer: Red Barrels

Platform: Microsoft Windows

Date of Release: May 18, 2023

The Outlast Trials was released to much critical acclaim earlier in the year, and for good reason too. Red Barrels have added a new twist to their franchise by introducing a co-op element.

Playing either solo or cooperatively (with up to four other people), you must take on a set of trials that increase in difficulty the more you progress, all while trying to avoid the characteristically horrifying enemies that are a hallmark of the Outlast series. The Outlast Trials also introduces a class system, with each character having distinct abilities such as healing and seeing through walls.

Yet, while the game is intense and has its terrifying moments, particularly in the first hours of gameplay, it has to be said that it fails to keep the same intensifying dread that the previous Outlast games. In truth, the game doesn’t have a great replay value and quickly becomes repetitive.

Despite its drawbacks, there is still a lot of fun to be had, and horror enthusiasts and fans of the previous games should certainly check this game out for its intense atmosphere, visual design, and innovative cooperative gameplay.

4. Dead Space (Remake)

Dead Space Remake Gameplay

Developer: Motive Studio

Platform: PS5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S

Date of Release: January 27, 2023

Dead Space 2023 is a remake of the original game in the franchise that was released in 2008 for seventh generation consoles. If you thought the original was terrifying, the augmented graphics and reimagining of some of the game’s creatures add something extra to the intense dread that is a familiar feeling in the Dead Space series.

All that was great about the first is evident here, too – a captivating story, a likable protagonist, and perfectly paced gameplay that will keep you at the edge of your seat at all times, whilst not overdoing it with the jump scares. Indeed, for an extra horrifying experience, try playing the game in a harder gameplay mode.

Some critics of the game pointed to a lack of innovation and ambition in taking the game in a direction to the original, but, in truth, negative feedback for the game was few and far between.

Overall, the Dead Space remake is easily one of the best horror games of 2023, and it is one that fans of the genre should be itching to try if they haven’t done so already.

3. Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake Gameplay

Developer: Capcom

Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows

Date of Release: March 24, 2023

After the successful remakes of RE2 and RE3, Capcom have once again smashed it out of the park with the incredible remake of Resident Evil 4. Originally released in 2005, the game once again follows U.S. federal government agent Leon Kennedy as he attempts to rescue Ashley Graham, the daughter of the president.

With revamped graphics, a completely overhauled audio system, and modernized gameplay, Resident Evil 4 stays true to its roots whilst also providing a level of tension and horror that may only have been possible with this new perspective and reimagining of level designs.

Though the story is pretty much identical to the original, the pacing feels a lot better and there is a more in-depth characterisation of a lot of the game’s characters. In addition to this is some stellar voice acting that only adds to the immersion.

One has to give props to Capcom for their dedication to the remakes. After the success of their prior revivals, it would have been easy for them to cash in easily with Resident Evil 4 without too much effort. Instead, they seem to have put a lot of care into ensuring that the game has that authentic Resident Evil feel, whilst also innovating the gameplay and maintaining the franchise’s intense atmosphere.

2. Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 Gameplay

Developer: Remedy Entertainment

Platform: PS5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S

Date of Release: October 27, 2023

Thirteen years after the release of the horror-adventure masterpiece Alan Wake, we are treated to a second installment and continuation of a story that captivated so many of us.

The game may not be classed as an out and out horror by some peoples standards, but the suspense that Remedy are able to build at times is really quite something to behold. It helps that the game is incredibly immersive, too. When you factor in the super realistic graphics, emotive voice acting, and mysterious atmosphere, Alan Wake 2 easily becomes one of the must have horror games for 2023.

It is not to the tastes of everyone, though, and for all its positives it’s worth mentioning some of the drawbacks that have been mentioned since its release. The main criticism is that its linear nature has made some people feel like it is a walking simulator. Others claim that the pace of the game is too slow, too, particularly in the beginning.

All in all though, Alan Wake 2 is definitely one for horror aficionados to seek out and, although it is not completely essential to enjoy the game, I’d also recommend playing both the original Alan Wake and Control (2019), or at least watching a video overview, to fully appreciate every element of this entry.

1. Amnesia: The Bunker

Amnesia The Bunker – Gameplay

Developer: Frictional Games

Platform: PS4, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Date of Release: June 6, 2023

A feature of the Amnesia series is its deeply unsettling atmospheric horror, and this fourth entry to the franchise is no different. Amnesia: The Bunker sees players take control of a French soldier, Henri, as he tries to escape and avoid a chillingly haunting monster that preys on the soldier in a World War 1 bunker.

As with its predecessors, the game adopts a first-person perspective and consists of the usual features of the series such as light sources, interactive objects, supplies, and safe rooms. However, there is no safe room in this installment.

In a similar fashion to Alien: Isolation, this game is a cat and mouse style horror in which “the beast” that stalks you reacts to your movements and actions as you explore the semi-open world.

Most negative reviews of Amnesia: The Bunker are from people who suggest that the game is TOO scary, so if this sounds like the horror game you want to play this Halloween, you’re in for a real suspenseful ride!

10 Beginner Tips for DayZ: How to Get Better https://blogofgames.com/10-beginner-tips-for-dayz-how-to-get-better/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 14:37:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=387 DayZ is one of the best post-apocalyptic survival games around, but it’s also an unforgiving game that can prove frustrating for newer players who are learning the ropes.

It is a multiplayer game, but can be enjoyed solo – in fact, it’s perhaps a good idea to learn the ropes by yourself in the first instance, before branching out and finding a crew.

That being said, we’ve put together a short list of beginner tips for DayZ, which will hopefully provide a good foundation for the evolution of your skill level.

Making friends in DayZ

The first point may seem like an obvious one, but one of the most crucial survival tips for DayZ is to keep as quiet as possible. You might have to rein in frustration and be disciplined, as moving slowly can feel painful at a time when you just want to crack on and get some new gear.

Yet, the moment you run past a small herd of zombies with little to no equipment is the moment you can kiss your player goodnight. One zombie is manageable, two is a problem, any more is usually a death sentence.

Another way to get better at DayZ is to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. It’s easy to get complacent and tunnel vision on your end destination, but the best approach is a methodical one.

Pick a goal, plan your route, and move towards it in small increments, stopping to assess the situation at each point. It’s a good DayZ tip to play the game as if you’re constantly being tracked by a sniper (and often you likely will be). This way, you’ll move using the environment as a weapon, finding cover and staying hidden at all times.

Learning the DayZ map will help you navigate

One of the beginner tips for DayZ that I ignored for too long is to learn the map. New players can roam around the Chernarus aimlessly for far too long. Instead, study the DayZ map, become familiar with the spawn locations, and you will slowly start to create a picture of how you fit into the larger area.

This will hasten your play when you first spawn, as knowing your location will help you plan where to head first in order to get the best possible start.

Following on from the previous point, it is equally useful to explore every nook and cranny in the map. It’s not enough to just know where the main cities and outposts are, you’ll also need to know what’s in each location – where are the most likely places for food, weapons, tools, and other amenities.

This will help you identify where the best loot is, where military camps are, and where most of the PvP action is likely to take place, among other things.

DayZ water pumps will keep you hydrated

One of the most useful beginner tips for DayZ is to conserve your resources. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s not as easy as it first appears. It can be tempting to eat/drink resources as soon as you get them, but it’s usually not the best tactic.

If consumables are sparse, you’ll want to let your hydration and hunger reach red before eating or drinking. This is because your parameters deplete faster when they are in the white zone, so it is not wise to waste them when resources are minimal.

Once you’ve figured out the basics by playing by yourself, you’ll find better luck working in a team. Chernarus is an unforgiving place, so having friends and companions can be the difference between life and death.

Where possible, play with a microphone. This means you can declare yourself as friendly to others, and figure out who might be hostile. Silence will most likely be deemed untrustworthy, and you will be gunned down for refusing to cooperate.

First person combat in DayZ

This is a matter of personal preference. But, in my opinion, both camera perspectives have their use in DayZ

For general gameplay and roaming, I play the game in third-person mode. This allows the player to have a wider field of vision, and enables players to look over and past walls that are not possible to look beyond in first person mode.

When looting buildings, though, you’ll want to switch to the first-person camera, as you’ll be able to see and grab items faster. This camera perspective is also better for combat, as soon as you enter a fight, switch camera to first-person as the crosshair is more accurate in this mode.

The bread and butter of almost all survival games is to stay well fed and hydrated, and things are no different here. It’s one of the best beginner tips for DayZ. Expanding on that, though, there are certain things to be aware of that will make your life easier when starting out.

All towns will have a water pump (typically located next to the police station, but not always), and it is always a good idea to take a good drink before traversing the map further. Additionally, most towns have orchards and fruit trees that can be great places to stock up on sustenance for your journey. Learning to identify apple, pear, and plum trees can significantly enhance your ability to survive.

DayZ Zombie Horde

This is one of the DayZ tips that often gets overlooked, but keeping well-managed inventory is essential. Have your most important items near the top of your inventory, so you can grab them quickly when in a pickle.

This will most likely be fully loaded magazines, food and water, and medical supplies. It’s always wise to keep a number of bandages available should you find them, as bleeding out following a scrap with a zombie can be one incredibly frustrating way of dying.

This is more of an advanced beginner tip, but it’s definitely something that you will want to learn once you get better at DayZ. There are certain resources that are essential for base building, such as a shovel, wooden planks and logs, hammer and nails, and a hatchet, among other things.

Having a solid base is a great way to preserve all of your loot and can give you a welcome reprieve from the hostile post-apocalyptic environment of Chernarus. Check out this handy base building guide for a more detailed overview.

We hope you enjoyed these beginner tips for DayZ, and please let us know if you can think of some other great tips that will help our readers become better survivalists.

All 3 Pioneer Cemetery Infestation Nest Locations – Days Gone https://blogofgames.com/all-3-pioneer-cemetery-infestation-nest-locations-days-gone/ Sun, 06 Mar 2022 13:36:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=311 Got stuck trying to find one of the Pioneer Cemetery infestation nest locations? Don’t worry, it seems like a fairly common problem in Days Gone

To make life easier, we’ve mapped out the three nest sites for you, along with tips on how to approach each nest.

The Pioneer Cemetery is one of the first locations that you come to during the game if you follow the early Out of Nowhere quest to find Leon’s stash by the Angel Statue. The sites may look close according to the above map picture, but they are actually quite spread out and it can be easy to miss one of the infestations.

Related: What are the most realistic zombie games?

south-west-infestation-nest-pioneer-cemetery-3627377 South-west infestation nest – Pioneer Cemetery

The first infestation nest will be the first one you encounter as you travel towards the Pioneer Cemetery from the south-west.

As you enter the southern part of the infestation area, a house is located just off the road to your left. There are usually a fair number of infected on the main road, too, indicating that you are near the nest.

east-infestation-nest-pioneer-cemetery-2957245 East infestation nest – Pioneer Cemetery

The second Pioneer Cemetery Infestation nest location is the easternmost nest and is situated slightly to the east of the angel statue in the cemetery.

The nest is found inside a large red barn, and you can easily see it from afar so throwing a molotov from a reasonable distance will allow for a quick escape if desired.

Some people have reported a bug at this infestation site, and even after clearing the nest, Deacon may comment that another nest is nearby. Don’t worry though, there is only one nest here, and the other locations are indicated in this article.

north-infestation-nest-pioneer-cemetery-9972496 North infestation nest – Pioneer Cemetery

The final nest is the one that took me the longest to find as it is slightly away from the cemetery on a raised bit of land that overlooks Pioneer Cemetery. This is the northernmost nest in the cemetery.

The nest is located inside a small barn with a side porch. It’s hard to miss as there will be infected around the area waiting to attack. It’s best to take out these guys silently before torching the building. There is also a blue car next to the building which can help you identify the correct site.

If you’re still struggling to find the Pioneer Cemetery infestation nest locations, you might find this Days Gone interactive map useful. Here you will find all of the nest sites, in addition to every other quest map indicator that will help you get to 100% completion.

The 7 Best Games Like 7 Days to Die https://blogofgames.com/the-7-best-games-like-7-days-to-die/ Wed, 06 Oct 2021 19:39:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=512 7 Days to Die is an open world survival horror game that was initially released in late 2013. In truth, it is still one of the best survival games out there, and many that have tried to replicate it have fallen far from the mark.

Yet, there are still some great survival games out there that are at least as good as it. Here are the best games like 7 Days to Die.

In Rust you wake up naked on a beach and must survive

Developer: Facepunch Studios, Double Eleven

Platform: macOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PS4

Year of Initial Release: 2018

Rust is a multiplayer survival game that takes place in a hostile open world environment where players try to take each other down in order to survive. It sounds brutal, and it really can be.

In Rust, you have to be mindful of your health parameters – stay well fed, keep warm, and watch your stamina levels whilst in the water. You also have to be aware of the wildlife that surrounds you, with wolves and bears being a particular threat to your existence. It’s the other players, though, who will be both your biggest asset and danger.

If you’re looking for the best games like 7 Days to Die, Rust is a good place to start. It is challenging, rewarding, good-looking, and smooth. It should be noted that the community has a reputation for being quite toxic, so be mindful of that if you are looking to get started.

Buy Rust on Steam.

DayZ – PC Gameplay

Developer: Bohemia Interactive

Platform: Microsoft Windows, PS4, Xbox One

Year of Initial Release: 2018

What started as a mod for ARMA 2 has turned into one of the best zombie survival games around. Set in the fictional Chernarus, the main goal of DayZ is to stay alive for as long as possible in the midst of a zombie outbreak that pits players against the raging undead.

Find supplies, clothing, food, and shelter along the way, and look out for weapons and firearms that make defending yourself a bit easier. You can make friends (or, most likely, enemies) with other players throughout your journey, too, and this is one of the game’s best aspects. There are times when the generosity of strangers has really got me out of a pickle, but most of the time you can expect a fight.

All in all, the DayZ community is a nice one, and this is definitely one to try if you’re in the market for games similar to 7 Days to Die

Check out the DayZ homepage here.

Project Zomboid PC Gameplay

Developer: The Indie Stone

Platform: Java, Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux

Year of Initial Release: 2013 (still in alpha stage)

In the interest of full disclosure, when I first played Project Zomboid I went into the game expecting not to like it. There was something about the isometric viewpoint and basic aesthetic that I thought would limit the immersion. Fortunately, the game proved me wrong.

Project Zomboid is one of the most in depth survival games around. There is so much to do that it’s truly surprising how cheap you can pick the game up for. One of the coolest aspects of the game is the Trait system, which dictates what skills and perks your character has. The thing is though, you must balance positive and negative traits in order to have any. For example, if you want the Locksmith perk to be able to break into doors easily, you may have to take on the negative Trait of being a smoker, meaning that your character will have another parameter to be mindful of whilst trying to negotiate survival.

At the moment, it’s more of a single player game, but there are plans to greatly expand the multiplayer mode in the near future. This is one that you’ll not want to miss if you’re a fan of survival games, and it’ll definitely scratch that itch if you’re looking for games like 7 Days to Die

Visit the Project Zomboid homepage for more info.

Explore the vast world of Conan the Barbarian

Developer: Funcom

Platform: Microsoft Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Year of Initial Release: 2018

If you’re looking for games like 7 Days to Die without zombies, then Conan Exiles could be the one for you. This is a prehistoric survival game that explores the canon of Conan the Barbarian through the lens of a customizable player character.

By using the natural resources in the biomes you find yourself in, players need to stay on top of hunger and thirst levels, and will need to keep an eye out for hostile enemies that include the NPC wildlife and other players.

The more you play, the more Experience points you will gain. This is how you progress in the game. Experience points allow you to augment your combat, crafting, and gathering skills, and soon enough you’ll become a survival expert with a large base to monitor and manage.

Download Conan Exiles on Steam

Look out for dangerous wildlife in the Long Dark

Developer: Hinterland Studio Inc.

Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Year of Initial Release: 2017

For many, The Long Dark is the most realistic survival game around. It is also one of the best. This is a first-person survival game that tries to be as true to real life as possible. There are no fantasy elements, and you must only learn how to survive against the cold, dark, hunger, and wildlife. I say only, but this is actually extremely challenging.

It’s likely you will die a number of times before getting the hang of things, and for this reason I’d recommend doing the campaign mode first. It is both engaging and illuminating.

The Long Dark has a great sense of atmosphere, too, in a way that the other games like 7 Days to Die aren’t able to replicate. If you are looking to get completely immersed in a survival experience, this could be the one for you.

Download The Long Dark on Steam.

Developer: Studio Wildcard

Platform: PC, PS4, Xboc One, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch

Year of Initial Release: 2017

Ark Survival Evolved PC Gameplay

As action-survival games go, Ark: Survival Evolved is up there with the cream of the crop. It truly is an incredible game and if you’re looking for games like 7 Days to Die that don’t have zombies, I would highly recommend this.

After finding yourself stranded on a mysterious island crammed full of primeval creatures and fantastical beasts, you must learn to negotiate the harsh environments by killing or taming animals, gathering food and resources, and building shelters. The building aspect of Ark is particularly impressive, and I have seen some rather phenomenal bases.

Some people say that there is an awful lot of grinding, with very little to show for it at the end. While I can see the point, it’s still very satisfying playing with a group of friends and navigating your way to a state of surviving and thriving.

Download Ark: Survival Evolved on Steam.

Valheim PC Gameplay

Developer: Iron Gate AB

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Linux

Year of Release: 2021 (early access)

Valheim is a truly beautiful survival game experience that can be enjoyed both as a single-player and as a multiplayer. If you’re not bothered about zombies, this is the best game like 7 Days to Die you can find.

Survival has never been so fun as you build, craft, fight, and explore your way through the harsh open world. There are both PvE and PvP aspects, and making friends in the game is incentivized if you want to make survival as easy as possible.

You can develop vast viking settlements, build and sail ships to explore the seas, and craft weapons and armor using the finest resources available. At present, the community is a friendly one, and it is a great time to get into the game if you’re looking for a new survival game to sink your teeth into.

Download Valheim on Steam.

The game takes place in Massachusetts and follows the story of a haunted mansion in which three teenagers and the owner have gone missing. You can choose to play as a male or female character, and get to choose between 5 different classes – Detective, Journalist, Scientist, Medium, or Dabbler – all of which have unique attributes. Once you’ve chosen your character, you get to make up a party of choosing some of the other classes.

As you make your way through the haunted mansion, random battles will appear at regular intervals a la every RPG game of the time. The enemies are fairly diverse and the combat never seems to get too boring.

The best aspects of Laplace No Ma, though, are the story and sound design. The narrative is well-written and keeps you engaged throughout, while the music is equal parts catchy and chilling. When you add decent visuals to this, you’ve got yourself an engaging horror experience.

Laplace No Ma is definitely one of the best SNES horror games.

4. Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts (1991)

super-ghouls-n-ghosts-snes-gameplay-4609764 Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts SNES gameplay

I know it’s difficult to call this a horror game. It’s more of an action-platformer with horror elements. That being said, it’s still a great game and is one that I always recommend to people who are in the market for SNES horror games.

It’s aesthetic is quirky, the protagonist moves awkwardly, and the enemies are often goofy. But this all just adds to the fun. At times, it can be frustrating, but if you have the time to persevere you’ll soon see that Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts is more like a puzzle horror game that requires timing and a bit of know-how to get right.

Once your skill level improves in the game, the challenge becomes enjoyable, and you’ll no doubt end up liking this game. The unique artstyle and sound design further make it stand out as one of the best SNES horror games ever made.

3. Clock Tower (1995)

clock-tower-snes-gameplay-3058650 Clock Tower SNES gameplay

Clock Tower is a point and click horror game that is truly unique within the SNES world. You play as Jennifer while you explore an old mansion that is, of course, riddled with horrifying things.

The game takes a very dark turn when a scary figure wielding huge scissors impales a helpless victim against stained glass windows and begins hunting down Jennifer. The gameplay is based on trying to hide from the crazy scissor man by finding creative hiding places and searching for objects that might help along the way.

What really makes the game great, though, is the atmospheric music and simple but effective visuals. At times, you hear nothing but your own footsteps, but when you hear the scissors start snapping, you know it’s time to hide, and this can really get the heart racing.

WIthout a doubt, Clock Tower is easily one of the best SNES horror games ever made.

2. Demon’s Crest (1994)

demons-crest-snes-gameplay-6087664 Demon’s Crest SNES gameplay

Demon’s Crest seems to split opinion in the SNES world, but I ended up loving it. I mean, who doesn’t love flying through various platform levels as a demon, demolishing a multitude of enemies with an upgradable arsenal of weapons.

Granted, the game is short, and the level design is not as good as it could be, but Demon’s Crest is tons of fun. I’m aware of the nostalgia that could be influencing my decision to rank this so high as one of the best horror games for the SNES, but I would genuinely recommend this game to anyone looking for a different take on the genre.

It looks and sounds cool, and the gameplay is very easy to get used to. For me, this is a must play for those looking for the best SNES horror games.

1. Super Castlevania IV (1991)

super-castlevania-iv-snes-gameplay-8073389 Super Castlevania IV SNES gameplay

What a game Castlevania IV is. In fact, if you ask most people to rate the best SNES horror games, I’m sure this game would be in the top 2 at least 99% of the time.

It has a unique artstyle that just wants to make you hang out in the game for as long as possible. On top of that, there’s a great sound design that feels epic at all moments.

In general, this platform horror game is fair, and with a bit of patience you can easily figure out the enemy patterns and level designs in order to make your way to victory. The protagonist, Simon, has a whip that you can aim in multiple directions to take out enemies, and there is also access to other weapons along the way.

All in all, Super Castlevania IV is just a great game, and there’s a reason why so many people consider it to be one of the best horror games for the SNES.

Detention is a Taiwanese horror game that has a unique 2D side scrolling puzzle approach to the genre.

Set in the 1960s when Taiwan was under a period of martial law known as the White Terror, Detention draws horror through the use of immersive gameplay, intense atmospheric horror, and puzzle solving.

The narrative is meaningful, and it gives the player an insight into what it is like to grow up in a country where government censorship is extreme. The story revolves around two students who are stuck in Greenwood High School, Taiwan, and have to navigate their way through mysterious surroundings in order to escape.

This is a point and click 2D horror experience you won’t forget in a hurry, and is easily one of the best Chinese horror games of all time.

Firework is a puzzle horror game that requires players to solve the mystery of an accidental fire that takes place in a remote Chinese mountain village.

Firework draws on atmospheric horror as opposed to jump scares, and the sense of dread that builds as it progresses is intense. The unique art style, the story, and the puzzles take you on a real journey and, by the time you get to the end of it, Firework is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

3. Paper Dolls

paper-dolls-gameplay-1858706 Paper Dolls Gameplay

Developer: Beijing Litchi Culture Media Co., Ltd.

Year: 2019

Platform: PC, PS4

Paper Dolls was a game I went to with no real expectation and prior knowledge of. After about 15 minutes of playing the game for the first time on the PS4, I thought I was in for an easy ride and that there would be no problems completing it.

Then, all of a sudden, the atmosphere changed and I realised that I was in for a spine-chilling journey. So much so, in fact, that I had to put the game down and return to it a few days later. Paper Dolls creates an atmosphere of dread in a way that only the top tier horror games can, and if that is the kind of thing you are looking for, you won’t want to sleep on this.

You are thrown into the deep end right from the outset, and wake up in a darkly lit room with a few different artefacts for you to explore. As you progress, notes and items add to the lore of the game and help to keep you engaged.

Without giving too much away, it’s a game that you just have to play to understand and, without a doubt, is one of the best Chinese horror games ever created.

Download Paper Dolls on Steam.

2. Devotion

devotion-chinese-horror-game-9796587 Devotion – Chinese Horror Game

Developer: Red Candle Games

Year: 2019

Platform: PC

You may have heard about the horror game Devotion for all the wrong reasons. The game, which is produced by the same Taiwanese developers as Detention, entered mainstream news shortly after it was released due to it being banned in China for having a secret reference likening Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh.

Despite the controversy that the game garnered, it is one of the most terrifying horror experiences to have come out of the past few years and is a must play for fans of the genre.

Set in Taiwan during the 1980s, Devotion plays as a first-person walking simulator that revolves around a mysterious family who have each made vows in the name of their religious belief.

The combination of the unsettling atmosphere and the appropriately chilling sound design is enough to send shivers down the hardiest of spines. This is a game that only the brave will survive.

Download Devotion from the Red Candle Games website.

1. Paranormal HK

paranormal-hk-gameplay-6458973 Paranormal HK gameplay

Developer: Ghostpie Studio

Year: 2020

Platform: PC

If you’re looking for the kind of horror game that will prevent you from sleeping comfortably for the next few days, Paranormal HK could be exactly what you need.

Set during the Hungry Ghost Festival in the Kowloon Walled City, Paranormal HK requires players to delve into the world of Hong Kong urban legends and criminal cases. It is a first person horror adventure game that follows a largely linear plotline, and you must solve the mystery of a missing person, as well as other strange phenomena encountered along the journey.

By all accounts, Paranormal HK is completely terrifying and I’m not alone in regarding it as one of the scariest Chinese horror games around.

Download Paranormal HK on Steam.

The Best PS2 Horror Games https://blogofgames.com/the-best-ps2-horror-games/ Sun, 20 Dec 2020 14:54:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=291 We recently wrote about the best horror games for the Xbox 360, and here we’re going to take a look at some games from an even earlier console, the PS2.

Let’s not waste any time, here are the 5 best PS2 horror games, according to us at Blog of Games. If you don’t agree, let us know what you would add/remove in the comment section below.

5. Obscure (2004)

Obscure – PS2 Gameplay

For many, Obscure could probably fit in the so-bad-it’s-good category of horror, but that shouldn’t deter you from playing it. It is heaps of fun and, if you have someone to play with in co-op mode, you can multiply that fun tenfold.

The game was developed by Hydravision Interactive, with the plot based heavily on the 1998 sci-fi horror film The Faculty. In the game you control five teenagers – each of whom fit nicely into a horror flick trope – as they find themselves locked inside a school at night time fighting off various types of infected students.

It’s never gonna win any awards for story writing or voice acting, but there are some genuinely scary moments in Obscure and the gameplay is tons of fun. That’s what makes it a great PS2 horror game. You can even play a high definition version of Obscure on Steam now, too.

4. Clock Tower 3 (2002)

Clock Tower 3 – PS2 Gameplay

Clock Tower 3 is a stunning survival horror game that is easily the best game in the Clock Tower series. Not everyone will agree with that, of course, but Clock Tower 3 seemed to get the right blend of fun and weird gameplay, mixed with a tense and creepy atmosphere.

The game was directed by Kinji Fukasaku, a Japanese New Wave director, and his input can be seen in the way the story is told. Playing as 14-year old Alyssa Hamilton, you have to travel back to 1940s and 60s London and eliminate spirit entities that are haunting various locations. Firstly, Alyssa must free the spirits of a victim killed by the serial killer stonecutter, Sledgehammer. Then, you travel to the 1960s where you attempt to unravel the story of a murderer by the name of Corroder.

Some of the bosses you encounter are hit or miss on the horror scale, but overall the game has a great creepy feel and should easily be considered as one of the best PS2 horror games.

3. Siren (2003)

Siren – PS2 Gameplay

Probably one of the best Japanese horror games of all time, Siren (also known as Forbidden Siren) was developed by SCE Japan Studio and Project Siren.

Siren takes place in Hanuda, a remote Japanese town renowned for its reclusive and highly religious inhabitants. A local ritual is disrupted by an Earthquake, and a supernatural event causes people to turn into Shibito (undead). From here, you control 10 escapees as they try to figure out the horrifying mystery they find themselves in.

Siren is one of the darkest and most suspenseful horror games around, and it’s chilling atmosphere still holds up today. Some players had gripes about the English-speaking voice acting, but it doesn’t really detract from the sense of dread that the game builds up. If you’re a fan of horror games, this is one you really ought to try if you haven’t done so already.

2. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

Silent Hill 2 – PS2 Gameplay

For many, the second installment of the now hugely popular Silent Hill series is the best. It’s easy to see why, too.

For a start, the game tells a story that is relatable for most people, a story of loss and the grief that surrounds it. It is not just a run-of-the-mill tragedy, either, the plot in Silent Hill 2 is expertly delivered in a way that keeps you emotionally gripped throughout. It was rare for video games at the time to take on such mature themes, so players became engaged instantly in the story.

Putting the story to one side, the soundtrack is masterful and suits the mood of the game to a tee. Despite an average combat system, the puzzles in the game add a lot to the gameplay, and when coupled with some excellent characters and haunting visuals, Silent Hill 2 is not only one of the best PS2 horror games around, but of the best horror games of all time, period.

1. Fatal Frame (2001)

Fatal Frame – PS2 Gameplay

Even though Fatal Frame was released back in 2001, it still stands up on the current climate as one of the best horror games around. In fact, a lot of recent games don’t even hold a candle to this survival horror by Koei Tecmo.

One of the game’s main pulls is its atmosphere, and it can be considered a horror masterclass of how to cripple your consumers with a constant sense of dread. This is done through dimly lit surroundings that are navigable only with a Miku’s (the protagonist) camera and torch.

In truth, I actually prefer the sequel to this game, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (also available on the PS2), but I feel it would be remiss of me to not pay respect to the game that started off the whole franchise.

If you’re in the mood to be thoroughly creeped out, you can’t go wrong with Fatal Frame. For me, it is the best horror game for the PS2.

How Long To Beat Alien: Isolation? https://blogofgames.com/how-long-to-beat-alien-isolation/ Thu, 03 Dec 2020 15:09:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=415 Not only is Alien: Isolation one of the best sci-fi horror games ever made, it is also one of the scariest horror games of all time. Period.

Beating the game is difficult, and it may take some time to do so if you’re not used to the gameplay style. Here we discuss how long it takes to beat Alien: Isolation, and also answer other questions that are commonly asked about the game.

Can you hide from this Alien

According to How Long To Beat, Alien: Isolation will take around 25 hours to complete the main story at a leisurely pace.

I have to admit that it took me a lot longer to beat Alien: Isolation, though. Playing on the Normal difficulty setting, it took me around 30 hours to complete the main story, with an extra 2 hours to complete both of the DLCs, Crew Expendable and Last Survivor

If you’re going for the completionist approach – beating the main story, DLCs, extras, and all trophies – you should expect to spend between 45 and 50 hours.

Either way, Alien: Isolation is a great horror game and you certainly can’t accuse the developers of skimping on the content.

Alien Isolation – Ripley

Alien: Isolation is a very difficult game, especially if you play on the game’s recommended difficulty setting of Hard. Depending on how well you cope with horror games, playing on Hard will for certain increase the immersion of the game and allow you to experience it how the developers intended.

For me, Hard was a bit too much, so I wimped out and opted for the Normal setting. If you want to just get a taste for the game without worrying about it being too difficult, there are Easy and Novice modes. Conversely, if you want to get a bit crazy, try beating the game on Nightmare mode, though be warned that there is no map and your motion tracker will malfunction on occasion.

Overall, Alien: Isolation is one of the more difficult horror games around, but that also adds to its replay value. Once you;ve

Alien Isolation Motion Tracker

Alien: Isolation is one of the scariest game horror games around on all platforms, but it’s not scary in a typical horror game way. The jump scares aren’t gonna come out and get like they do in Amnesia or Resident Evil 7, for example, but the sense of atmosphere and dread that Isolation creates is unparalleled.

The tension created through the soundtrack and visuals will constantly have you on tenterhooks, and if you’re not used to horror games, you might find that you’ll want to take a break after a while.

The horror in Isolation is a slow burning type of horror that will keep you thoroughly engaged as you try to tiptoe and maneuver your way around the alien and the mortal danger it brings. For horror aficionados, Alien: Isolation is a must try.

We hope you enjoyed reading our article on how long to beat Alien: Isolation. This is one game that we thoroughly enjoyed playing through and we look forward to seeing the next horror game from Creative Assembly.

8 of the Best Co-op Horror Games on Steam https://blogofgames.com/8-of-the-best-co-op-horror-games-on-steam/ Fri, 23 Oct 2020 19:38:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=510 Looking for a good horror multiplayer that you can play online right now? We’ve got you covered. Check out this list of the 8 best co-op horror games on Steam.

pacify-coop-horror-gameplay-9886949 Pacify Coop Horror Gameplay

Pacify is an indie co-op horror game that plonks the players in a haunted house and leaves them to fend for themselves.

Made by the same developer as Emily Wants to Play, Sean Hitchcock, Pacify is an incredibly scary game that puts you in the shoes of a paranormal investigator tasked with ridding an old house of its horrors so the owner can put the property on the market. That’s really all there is to the story, and I actually like the fact that the game doesn’t overdo it with plotlines.

There is the option of playing Pacify in single player mode, but it is so much more fun playing with other folk online. You can join a group online with up to 3 other people, playing either with or against them. The main aim remains the same, stay out of sight of the haunted girl and try to pacify the evil that dwells in the house.

Play Pacify on Steam.

hunt-showdown-steam-gameplay-6677851 Hunt Showdown Steam Gameplay

Hunt: Showdown is a fun online horror multiplayer that places players in a dark swampy area with other human players and a whole host of demony monsters.

In the game, you get given bounties and have to scour the area to search for the boss. Each boss has different strengths and weaknesses and poses a different challenge. Upon killing the boss, you receive bounty tokens, this will alert other players to your location, though, and you must reach an extraction point before being hunted down yourself. This can create some tense moments and you are likely going to be on edge throughout the whole journey.

Play Hunt: Showdown on steam.

the-forest-steam-gameplay-5903593 The Forest Steam Gameplay

The Forest was released in the midst of the survival game craze, and is one of few that seems to have lasted well since it first came onto the scene.

The game has an excellent single player mode with a compelling story that helps build the atmosphere and immersion of the experience. In short, though, players are tasked with finding their son after he was abducted by a mysterious red figure following a plane crash.

The lighting effects, design, and overall visual elements are great with tons of detail, and the realism and dynamics of the environment make the entire gaming experience highly unnerving. On top of that, the audio effects are excellent – little to no music in the game really heightens one’s senses.

Play Forest on Steam.

in-silence-steam-coop-horror-1173298 In Silence Steam Coop Horror

In Silence is the most recent game on this list and it is still finding its feet in a lot of ways. This multiplayer horror game pits the player against other players (up to 6) as they bid for survival against a hypersensitive monster with incredible hearing abilities.

No doubt about it, In Silence is scary. Trying to make your way across a dark environment in complete silence is already a challenge, but when you know that there is a horrifying lizard monster on your tail, it gets ten times worse. You also get to play as the monster on occasion, which is as fun as you can imagine.

Play In Silence on Steam.

gtfo-steam-horror-multiplayer-2039467 GTFO Steam Horror Multiplayer

GTFO is an online horror game that, despite being early access, is a well-rounded horror experience that gives a good balance of horror and stealth.

GTFO has an eerie atmosphere that builds up tension slowly through the level design and fear of the unknown. The unknown being not being able to know what you will face around the corner.

Playing in a team of 4 human players, you have to explore an underground facility ridden with otherworldly creatures. Gun down your enemies with your teammates and cooperate with them to reach the best outcomes. This is a game that requires collaboration, so you;re going to want to strategize well with your fellow fighters.

Play GTFO on Steam.

dead-by-daylight-steam-coop-horror-1158393 Dead by Daylight Steam Coop Horror

As far as co-op horror games on Steam go, there aren’t many better than Dead by Daylight. Played in a 1 versus 4 format, one player takes on the role of a violent and disturbingly creative killer, while the others try to avoid his path.

This game has a huge onlight community and it’s easy to see why, Dead by Daylight creates atmosphere in a way that few online horror games know how to. The combo of moody lighting, intense sound effects and immersive gameplay make this one one you’ll definitely want to try online with other gamers.

Play Dead by Daylight on Steam.

phasmophobia-steam-gameplay-9792597 Phasmophobia Steam Gameplay

Phasmophobia is another recent addition to this list that really warrants its reputation as one of the best coop horrors around at the moment.

Everything about this game is good, and I think the accolades it has received are borne out of far more than it just being good for its genre. If you want to double up on your horror experience, play it on VR. That’s the stuff of nightmares.

As for the gameplay, you explore a darkly lit house trying to complete a number of objectives related to the ghost that dwells within. Pay attention to your stats – particularly sanity, the more you lose your sanity, the more in danger you’ll become.

Play Phasmophobia on Steam.

left-4-dead-2-steam-gameplay-6610054 Left 4 Dead 2 Steam Gameplay

Left 4 Dead 2 achieves the seemingly impossible task of being better than its predecessor, and it does so in style. From its graphical improvements to the AI improvements, Left 4 Dead 2 is an intense coop horror game on Steam that will test your survival abilities.

Playing in a team of 4 , you must choose your weapon appropriately in order to keep the incoming zombie hordes at bay.

The community is vibrant and you’ll always find someone to play with, no matter which game mode you play. Fans of multiplayer horror games must play this if they haven’t already.

Play Left 4 Dead on Steam.
