In exchange for your unwanted items, Sell Creep will reward you with shells. The higher quality the item, the more shells the green sewer monster will give you.

The 5 Best Games Like The Binding of Isaac https://blogofgames.com/the-5-best-games-like-the-binding-of-isaac/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 14:12:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=354 The Binding of Isaac set the tone for a new era of roguelike dungeon crawlers, and few games have been able to replicate its mastery in the genre since it was first released.

That’s not to say there aren’t other similar great games out there, though. In fact, there are plenty. Here are 5 of the best games like The Binding of Isaac to get you started.

Rogue Legacy Gameplay

If you liked TBOI, there’s a strong likelihood you may also have a good time with Rogue Legacy. It’s built on the same run progression mindset as TBOI, has cutesy and simple graphics, and has ultra addictive gameplay.

It’s true that Rogue Legacy isn’t quite as varied as Isaac (in terms of synergies, characters, and enemies), but it in many ways it has a more tangible sense of progression, and you can feel the levelling up process from run to run.

Rogue Legacy 2 is also a good option if you end up liking the first instalment, but it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor, in my opinion.

Nuclear Throne Gameplay

Nuclear Throne is a top-down dungeon crawler much like The Binding of Isaac, and there are a number of different characters to choose from, too.

Nuclear Throne is a less forgiving game and it could be argued that more skill is required to beat a run. Where it differs mainly is that you have the potential to change weapons on each level in Nuclear Throne, and mutations allow for permanent buffs to your chosen character.

In general, NT has a faster pace than Isaac, and it can get pretty frantic at times. That being said, I think fans of the roguelike genre should definitely give Nuclear Throne a try, it’s definitely up there with the best games like Isaac

RELATED: Nuclear Throne VS Enter the Gungeon

Dead Cells Gameplay

At first glance, Dead Cells might not seem so similar to Isaac. Dead Cells is a side-scrolling platform game inspired by Castelvania, which challenges players with exploring an ever-changing castle to reach the ultimate boss.

If you look past the visuals, though, the games are quite similar. Both provide an ever-increasing challenging playthrough, in which you progress through levels in order to take on the final boss. Dying means that you start the game again. Both games also rely heavily on luck, consumables, and items.

There is more action in Dead Cells, and it is faster paced with a heavier focus on combat, yet both Dead Cells and Isaac have that same captivating replay value that keeps one wanting to come back and try new ways of winning a run.

Hades Gameplay

For many, Hades is the best rogue lite to have ever been released, and it’s hard to argue against that.

Just like Isaac, Hades has one of the most addictive gameplay loops in the world of rogue lites, it’s fast and addictive, and there are a multitude of items and power ups to be found along the way.

The story in Hades is where the game moves to another level than Isaac. Having an engaging dialogue and a well-written narrative goes a long way to making Hades stand out from the rogue lite crowd.

In a similar fashion to Dead Cells and Rogue Legacy, you start off very weak in Hades, and it is highly unlikely that you’ll win a run early on. The more you play, though, the stronger you get, and this is where its level of addictiveness goes off the chain.

In truth Hades is one of the best games to have been released in the past decade, let alone one of the best games like The Binding of Isaac

Enter the Gungeon Gameplay

The closest thing to The Binding of Isaac that you’re gonna find is Enter the Gungeon, no question. They are similar in so many ways. Gungeon has keys, shops, multiple characters, a similar perspective, passive and active items, and a progression system that allows you to slowly level up the game the more items you unlock.

It’s probably true that EtG requires a bit more skill than BoI, and relies less on the randomness of items and weapons that are given to you on a run. But only slightly less. EtG still requires the RNG gods to provide you with guns capable of defeating Advanced Dragun and other similarly difficult bosses.

Simply put, if you like BoI and haven’t tried Enter the Gungeon yet, you must. Out of all the games like The Binding of Isaac out there, this is the most similar.

The 10 Best Isaac Trinkets (Repentance Update) https://blogofgames.com/the-10-best-isaac-trinkets-repentance-update/ Fri, 25 Jun 2021 19:57:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=526 A good trinket can go a long way in the Binding of Isaac, and can sometimes even be the difference between a won run and failed run. With the recent Repentance DLC, a lot of new trinkets entered the game, and a fair few of the old trinkets have been altered.

Here, we’ve made a list of the 10 best Isaac trinkets. This is completely subjective, of course, and your list may be completely different. If so, let us know in the comment section at the end of the article!

What are the best synergies in the Binding of Isaac?

Perfection Trinket

Perfection was one of the new trinkets added in the Repentance update and, if you manage to use it successfully, it is easily one of the best Isaac trinkets.

Perfection gives +10 luck to the player, but there is a caveat. In order to get the bonus, you have to clear 3 floors in a row, so it’s not easy.

Perfection works well with items such as Holy Mantle and Blanket, as the shield they provide will get you one step closer to the +10 luck reward.

nose-goblin-trinket-8299133 Nose Goblin Trinket

As gross as Nose Goblin is, it has been one of my favorite trinkets ever since it was added in the Afterbirth+ DLC. This trinket adds the chance of firing green booger tears that stick to enemies and continue to do damage.

Unfortunately, the Repentance update nerfed Nose Goblin so the tears only stick to the enemy for 10 seconds, as opposed to the previous 60. Yet, for me, it is still one of the best trinkets in the Binding of Isaac.

The only problem with this trinket arises if you also carry the Sinus Infection item. They both do the exact same thing so it renders Nose Goblin pretty much useless.

No Trinket

The No! trinket stops all activated items from appearing during a run, leading to the potential for some powerful passive items to be acquired. There is nothing more annoying than completing the first few floors and only encountering activated items of which you can take just one.

A lot of players would have the No! trinket a lot higher on this last. Whilst I agree that it is one of the best Isaac trinkets, there are others that I’d rather see first.

Paper Clip Trinket

The Paper Clip is a pretty boring trinket, but it is incredibly useful if you’re struggling to find keys, particularly early on in a run.

The Paper Clip negates the use of keys for golden chests, and allows the player to open it for free. There’s not much more to be said about it, really. Whenever I see the Paper Clip, I usually pick it up gleefully.

brain-worm-trinket-with-brimstone-4447006 Brain Worm Trinket with Brimstone

Brain Worm is another new trinket that was added in Repentance and is a great help for those of us (like myself) with terrible aim. If you miss an enemy while holding Brain Worm, the tar will automatically change direction in a 90 degree angle to hit it.

Brain Worm works particularly well with Brimstone and you can easily melt all of the enemies in the room with one laser beam.

Blessed Penny Trinket creates soul hearts

Before Repentance, there were already a couple of great penny trinkets – Bloody Penny and Counterfeit Penny particularly stand out for me. But when the Blessed Penny was added it immediately became the best of the bunch.

Blessed Penny gives the chance for half a soul heart to appear each time a coin is picked up. It can be particularly powerful if playing as the Blue Baby or if you’re trying to avoid red heart containers.

Cracked Crown Trinket

Cracked Crown, while not as good since the Repentance update, is still easily one of the best trinkets in the Binding of Isaac

In Afterbirth+, Isaac would get a 33% boost to stat upgrades, whereas now this boost is only 20%. If you have Mom’s Box, stat boosts are increased even greater and Cracked Crown becomes incredibly powerful.

That being said, this item may not be high in many people’s list post-Repentance, as a lot of Isaac players were mad that it was nerfed so hard.

Curved Horn Trinket

Curved Horn is a no-nonsense damage upgrade that will always provide at least +2 damage to Isaac’s tears no matter when you pick it up.

It is a crowd-pleaser within the Isaac community and it’s not hard to see why. So many runs of mine have been saved by Curved Horn when I was crying out for a damage upgrade. For me, it is right up there with the best Isaac trinkets.

Flat File Trinket stops spikes from appearing

Another trinket to have been added in Repentance, Flat File is one of the best Isaac trinkets for survival as it stops all spikes from extending and appearing. That includes the spikes from the Curse Room door, Spiked Rocks, Spiked Chests, Wall Huggers, and more.

You don’t realise how useful Flat File is until you actually have it. There are tons of spikes in the game, and not having them around makes runs become much more tranquil and stress-free!

You’ll probably find that you’ll zoom through some of the rooms that were previously troublesome, too.

Cancer Trinket

I’m sure it’s no surprise to see the Cancer trinket sitting at the top of this list of the best trinkets in BOI. It really is a phenomenal upgrade and it was nice to see this trinket avoid the nerf list in the Repentance update.

Having a -2 tear delay is incredibly powerful, no matter which stage of the game you receive it. And the fact that it ignores the tear cap that so many items and trinkets abide by makes it that much better.

If you can get you hands on Golden Cancer in addition to Mom’s Box, you’re in for a world of fun, as the tear delay benefits of the Cancer trinket will be tripled.

What do you think is the best trinket in the Binding of Isaac? Did you agree with our list? Let us know in the comment section below!

Notes: Very OP run that will leave you with triple Brimstone and homing shots to boot.

Slay the Spire Classes Ranked: Which is the Best Character? https://blogofgames.com/slay-the-spire-classes-ranked-which-is-the-best-character/ Tue, 18 May 2021 14:32:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=383 Choosing the best Slay the Spire character is of course completely dependent on your playstyle and the strategies you generally adopt to beat the game.

That being said, with enough experience with each class, you can start to see where the pros outweigh the cons between them. It’s highly probably that I’m still very much classed as a beginner in the game, but I’ve had a go at listing my favorite characters anyhow. This is subjective, but read on for the Slay the Spire classes ranked in order of worst to best, and let us know if you agree in the comment section below!

5 Slay the Spire tips for newbies

5 Similar games to Slay the Spire

Which game is better – Nuclear Throne or Enter the Gungeon?

Slay the Spire – The Silent

This may be a controversial choice for the bottom of rank, as many people love the Silent. Don’t get me wrong, the Silent is a strong character and was actually the first class that I completed a run with.

Yet, the more I played, the less progress I felt I could make with her. She has a good solid mix of Block, Attack, and Status cards, but is not really that great in any one field. If you can get your hand on a Wraith Form, then your likelihood of being victorious increases tenfold, but sometimes the cards you are dealt leave you struggling to get halfway through the first floor – this rarely seems to happen with other characters, at least for me. Perhaps this is because she has the largest starting deck (12) so there are more possible deck combinations.

The Silent has some of the worst relics in the game, too, and I find some of them confusing. The Ring of the Serpent, for example, almost feels like a curse as on turn 1 you draw 1 additional card as opposed to 2 with the Ring of the Snake (please correct me if I have got this wrong!). TIngsha and Tough Bandages are also very average relics if you don’t have the right deck.

There are some things I love about the Silent, though. Her ability to deal progressive Poison damage is one of my favorite things to do when playing as her. Having a few Noxious Fumes, Catalyst, and Crippling Cloud cards in combination with the Snecko Skull or The Specimen can lead to a very fun run.

That being said, I don’t think that the Silent is one of the best characters in Slay the Spire, and usually opt for another class to play as.

Slay the Spire – The Ironclad

The Ironclad is a very solid character with good health and a number of different approaches you can take to complete a run.

My favorite option is to take an aggressive approach that focuses on Strength and can lead to some devastating attacks. For this, you’ll likely want to have Demon Form, Inflame, and Feed. You may also choose to go the defensive route, using Barricade and high Block cards to consistently keep your Block stat high.

There are also some great builds you can form with the Pain curse, too, and when used in combination with Self-Forming Clay and Rupture, the Ironclad becomes almost undefeatable.

I also think that Burning Blood is the best starting relic of all of the Slay the Spire classes as the increased health gives you more chances to Smith instead of Rest.

With all that said, I wouldn’t say that the Ironclad is one of the best classes in Slay the Spire, as I personally think that the runs can get a bit samey with little variation. But his Strength and Health stats mean that she doesn’t come at the bottom of this Slay the Spire classes ranked list.

Slay the Spire – The Defect

For the longest time, the Defect would have topped any Slay the Spire classes ranked list of mine, and is still probably my most played class of the 4.

Playing as the Defect requires a fair amount of strategy and thought, as you must try and place your orbs in optimal positions and tactically decide whether your next move/s will be offensive or defensive.

I tend to opt for an offensive Lightning based approach, loading up on Ball Lightning, Static Discharge, Electrodynamics and Storm. My strongest runs, though, have actually been when Frost orbs have been the most prominent.

Defragment is a highly useful card in any build, as are Loop and Dualcast. Biased Cognition can also be a game changer, but this depends on how long you anticipate a battle to last for (the longer it goes on, the worse it gets).

All in all, the Defect is easily one of the best characters in Slay the Spire and I have no qualms about putting it second in this Slay the Spire classes ranked list.

Slay the Spire – The Watcher

It took me a very long time to get to even a decent level playing as the Watcher, but once you master her, she easily becomes the best character in Slay the Spire

Her ability to Scry and switch between different stances was a genius addition by MegaCrit when she was added in early Jan 2020, and the Watcher managed to make an already fantastic game even better. This may, in part, have influenced the decision to place her at the top of this Slay the Spire classes ranked list, but in truth she just really is that good.

You really feel like a ninja-like monk when you play as the Watcher, and it is imperative to know your enemy if you want to progress far. This is why experience pays off when playing as her.

If you know that your opponent will attack next turn, switch into the Calm stance and build your Block in preparation. When your opponent/s lay off the attacks is when the real fun begins. Here you can switch to the Wrath stance, doubling your attack power and potentially your Energy, too.

A pro tip for the Watcher is to not sleep on her Scry ability and get used to it as early as possible – it can be incredibly powerful. Scry allows you to avoid curses, plan your attacks better, and maximize the effects of any statuses you have applied.

For me, the Watcher definitely tops the list of the best classes to play as and it was an easy decision to place her at the top of this Slay the Spire classes ranked list.

Who do you think is the best character in Slay the Spire? Did you agree with our Slay the Spire characters ranked? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

In truth, they are all very well balanced and there is no character that is completely above or below another. This is one of the things that I like most about the game. You can pick it up and choose any 1 of the 4 Slay the Spire characters and still be in with a good chance of completing a run.

How to get to the Abyss in Hollow Knight: An Easy Guide https://blogofgames.com/how-to-get-to-the-abyss-in-hollow-knight-an-easy-guide/ Wed, 12 May 2021 09:25:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=159 Hollow Knight was one of the best games to come out of 2017, largely owing to its unique style and winning blend of action, adventure, and mystery.

That being said, the game can take a while to open up, and you may find yourself going back and forth umpteen times before you the world of Hallownest really opens up. One such place which many players struggle with is to get to the Abyss. Here, we go through exactly how to get there, what it is, and what you will find there.

What is the Abyss?

The Gate to the Abyss from the Ancient Basin

The Abyss is the bottommost location of Hallownest and is made up of various chambers and rooms. The area is an important feature of Hollow Knight lore, as it is the origin place of an ancient civilization (Vessels) who predate the Hallownest. Because of this, the Abyss is also referred to as the “birthplace”.

The Vessels worshipped the Void and were said to be mothered by the White Lady. They are genderless beings given life by the Pale King, who created them in the Abyss in an attempt to stop the ancient sickness, The Infection.

How to get to the Abyss in Hollow Knight

Defeat the Hornet to get the King’s Brand

To get to the Abyss in Hollow Knight, you must go to the very bottom of the Ancient Basin. The entrance will initially be locked and you will need a few things before you can proceed.

Entering the Abyss requires the King’s Brand, an illuminating brand that marks whoever holds it as the new king and allows them to unlock the door to the Abyss that is located at the bottom of the Ancient Basin.

The King’s Brand can be found in Kingdom’s Edge, which is guarded by the Hornet. You’ll need the Tram Pass to get there, and you’ll need the double jump ability to navigate your way through Kingdom’s Edge to find the Hornet. Go to the very end of the Cast-Off Shell and, after defeating the Hornet, you will get the King’s Brand.

Take the King’s Brand to the Ancient Basin and you will be able to open the gate that allows you to get to the Abyss in Hollow Knight. Read on to see what you may find there.

What can I find in the Abyss?

Scary Enemies in the Abyss – Hollow Knight

When you first enter the Abyss, you’ll have to be a little bit careful , as there are a lot of treacherous spikes and a few troublesome critters that could do you harm. Take your time, plan your route carefully, and you should be fine.

If you drop down to the first ledge on your left in the shaft, you’ll be able to get the Lifeblood Core if you go through the blue door and navigate through the rather tricky and spiky terrain. If you want to bypass this for now, head on down to the bottom of the shaft of the Abyss and turn right.

You’ll come across some shadowy figures that fly towards you, dispatch them quickly otherwise they will soon gang up on you in unmanageable numbers. Keep clear of the dark pools of evil liquid, too, as this is where the enemies spawn if you get too close.

Head to the top of the tower and activate the lighthouse in the room that you’ll find there. This clears the path for you to progress further. When you leave the lighthouse, go back down to the bottom of the tower and turn right. Swim or fly across the lake and enter the next room. Here you’ll find the Shade Cloak, which is one of the main reasons why you want to get to the Abyss in the first place.

The Shade Cloak greatly increases your exploration capabilities as it allows you to dash through the many black barriers that you may have encountered without taking damage.

Is Cornifer in the Abyss?

The Abyss Entrance Location

The Abyss is one of the three areas that the Cornifer can not be found, the other two being the Hive and the Resting Grounds.

I mention this in the article as many players have reported difficulty in finding Cornifer once they get to the Abyss, but the reality is that you are not able to find them there.

Or perhaps you’re looking to get into the genre and you’ve heard about these two as a possible introduction.

Both Nuclear Throne and Enter the Gungeon are phenomenal games that both have their pluses and minuses. Here, we’ll go through some of them and try and answer the commonly asked question – Nuclear Throne vs Enter the Gungeon: Which is better?

Nuclear Throne is often compared to Binding of Isaac and Gungeon

To answer which game is better we thought it’d be a good idea to first briefly outline the pros and cons of each game. So let’s start with the Nuclear Throne pros.

Well, to start with, Nuclear Throne is an insanely fun game with a really cool aesthetic that allows you to shoot robotic gorillas, giant maggots, and radioactive rhinos, to name a few.

It’s a difficult game, but skill is rewarded and there are different playstyles to choose from if you like to vary your approach. In fact, that’s one of the main pros. Every character feels unique, and you’ll have a completely different run if you’re playing with Fish, Robot, or Horror, for example.

There is a charming pixel art style, a wonderful sound design, and an incredible and fast-paced level design that makes each run truly feel different from the last.

On top of everything, Nuclear Throne has incredible replay value and I’ve often found myself in that good-old roguelite loop of “just one more run”

Nuclear Throne boasts a cool Co-op mode

As much as I love Nuclear Throne, no game is without its drawbacks. Perhaps the most common accusation thrown at the game is that it takes too long to unlock everything, and I can kind of see the justification of that point. Quite simply, the game is huge in terms of unlocks and the length it can sometimes take in order to complete a run.

Another common criticism is that Nuclear Throne is too hard. Yes, it’s true that you may not win as many runs as you would in the Binding of Isaac (no disrespect to BOI, though, it’s one of my favorites). For me, though, the challenge of Nuclear Throne is one of the main contributing factors of its replay value.

Enter the Gungeon gameplay

Moving on to Enter the Gungeon, let’s start with the pros, or which there are many.

It has a smooth and crisp aesthetic with unique chambers. It doesn’t suffer from item bloat, like so many roguelites do. You’ll find yourself humming the soundtrack hours after you’ve stopped playing. And the game gets increasingly better the more items you unlock.

What’s more, every floor (or Chamber) feels unique, including the hidden floors, such as the Oubliette. One of the best things about Enter the Gungeon, though, is the boss fights. Each boss feels like a special event that you must plan the entire chamber around. If you enter that boss room underprepared, you can be sure that your run is not going to end as well as you’d have liked it to.

Perhaps the biggest positive for Enter the Gungeon, though, is its humor. The game doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and is all about having fun. For me, that is just what a roguelite needs to do.

Galting Gull is a tricky early game Gungeon boss

There’s no denying that Enter the Gungeon is an incredibly difficult game, and this is perhaps the most heard criticism of it. Money, items, and guns, can be sparse if you’re on a particularly difficult run, and I’d even go as far as to say that one will lose more runs than they win.

A lot of the upgrades can seem lacklustre, too, only becoming good when you synergise an item with a different one. Finding good Gungeon synergies can be extremely rare, too, and there are some combinations that I’ve only ever seen once in the game.

And finally, the grinding in Enter the Gungeon can take a long, long time. For example, you may be required to defeat an incredibly rare enemy 30 times to unlock an item, this just seems unfair!

So, weighed up the pros and cons in this Nuclear Throne vs Enter the Gungeon debate. Now on to the verdict!

Enter the Gungeon Combat

Well, let’s start by saying that it’s perfectly okay to like both games equally (I know, mind blowing!). That being said, if I had to choose one, I’d go for Enter the Gungeon.

Gungeon has it all – the catchy soundtrack, the rewarding boss kills, the creative synergies. You need a lot of skill to play Gungeon, and it gets progressively challenging and interesting the more you unlock.

That being said, it’s easy to see why people prefer Nuclear Throne. It has a unique vibe within the top down roguelike dungeon crawlers, and it has a distinct aesthetic that sets it apart from the rest. Your skill level also matters right from the minute you start the game, as opposed to Enter the Gungeon which is far more punishing until you’ve done some grinding.

I can’t place my finger on exactly why, but I always returned to Enter the Gungeon before Nuclear Throne, and for that reason I have to choose it as the better game.

In truth, though, the two games aren’t that similar, so it’s hard to choose a winner when considering Nuclear Throne vs Enter the Gungeon. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and if you’re new to the roguelite genre, you can’t do worse than trying them both.

The 5 Best Nuclear Throne Characters https://blogofgames.com/the-5-best-nuclear-throne-characters/ Wed, 24 Mar 2021 14:08:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=246 Choosing the best Nuclear Throne characters is a subjective endeavor and the top 5 will most likely be different depending on who you ask. That being said, I’ve attempted to put together my favorite 5 characters below.

The main criteria I used to decide which is the best was how fun the character is to play as, but I also factored in the consistency of the character and the replay value. Read on for the best characters in Nuclear Throne!

What are the best synergies in Enter the Gungeon?

5 great games similar to Slay the Spire

5. Fish

Fish – Nucelar Throne

Fish is a great character with a strong passive ability that allows him to get more ammo. With enough practice you can also use the roll to evade enemy attacks, too. In all honesty, though, I usually just use the roll to get around faster.

Perhaps Fish is only in this list for nostalgic reasons, as I played Nuclear Throne for a long time with Fish before even trying any other characters. But even with that in mind, Fish is one of the best Nuclear Throne characters for beginners, largely due to the relative ease of use. It is rare that you’ll get an OP Fish run, though, unfortunately.

4. Crystal

Crystal – Nucelar Throne

Crystal is a great character for beginners to the game. She has good HP and her shield is good at keeping you safe in lieu of having a melee weapon. When you factor in the Throne Butt, which augments the shield and allows for teleportation, she easily becomes one of the best Nuclear Throne characters.

When I first started playing Nuclear Throne, I always got far with Crystal due to her defensive prowess and extra HP. But I soon realised that using Crystal was actually hindering my progress with other characters. Getting used to defending with her shield made me lose the ability to dodge bullets with other characters.

So, whilst I’d certainly recommend Crystal if you’re starting out, don’t get too comfortable with her and get used to bad habits, it could harm you long-term.

3. Robot

Robot – Nuclear Throne

A lot of people don’t like using Robot, but for me it has led to some of the most enjoyable runs I’ve ever had in the game. Plus, it’s a Robot!

Granted, it takes a bit of time to get used to playing as him, but once you do he is easily one of the best characters in Nuclear Throne. As a tip for new Robot users, make sure you eat everything that you carry on with you and take full advantage of his active item.

Maybe I’ve just got lucky with my Robot runs, as many see the Robot as a boring character who, due to the lack of combat abilities, grows dull fast. Yet, the combination of strong defense and offense, plus the potential to find good weapons early, easily make Robot one of the best Nuclear Throne characters for me.

2. Horror

Horror – Nuclear Throne

9 times out of 10, if you ask the average Nuclear Thrones player to rank their favorite character, Horror would be in the top 5. It’s easy to see why, too, Horror has the potential to be OP.

First off, having the option off an extra mutation at each level up can turn a weak or average build into a strong one fast. But if that’s not enough, Horror has some of the best Ultra Mutations in the game, and his Rad-Beam can get you out of some tricky situations, too.

All in all, Horror is a very strong character and there are a number of different approaches you can take as him. Because of this, I’d easily put Horror up there as one of the best Nuclear Throne characters.

1. Y.V. (Yung Venuz)

Yung Venuz – Nuclear Throne

I’ve had so much fun playing as Yung Venuz that I have absolutely no regrets about putting him at the top of the best Nuclear Throne characters. I don’t think I’ll be the only one, too.

Shooting faster really does make that much of a difference for me, and I never get bored as playing as Y.V.

There’s not really much extra to add here, Yung Venuz does all the talking himself, if you haven’t yet tried the character, get out there and do it, you won’t regret it.

The 10 Most Difficult Enter the Gungeon Bosses https://blogofgames.com/the-10-most-difficult-enter-the-gungeon-bosses/ Mon, 08 Mar 2021 14:10:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=352 Enter the Gungeon is one of the harder top down rogue-lite games out there, and a number of difficult bosses can make your run a misery if you’re not prepared (and even if you are prepared, sometimes).

Some are harder than others, though, and after countless hours in the game there are some that I still find impossible to master. That being said, here is a list of the 10 most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses. This list is subjective, of course, and you may have different ideas. If so, let us know in the comment section below!

Ammoconda – Gungeon Boss

First up on this list of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses is Ammoconda. The main challenge of this snake boss is its unpredictability. Slithering around the room in unpredictable patterns, Ammoconda will fire bullets in all directions and in a seemingly random fashion.

The fact that it’s a Second Chamber boss makes this even harder. If your run hasn’t been kind to you by the time you reach Ammoconda, you could be saying goodbye to the run right there and then. Sometimes even sheer skill can’t carry you through at this stage. Just be sure to have a few blanks at the ready.

The Kill Pillars – Gungeon Boss

The number of runs that I’ve lost at the hands of the Kill Pillars makes me shudder at the thought. These four phantom bullet statues are incredibly troublesome and it’s rare to come through the battle without getting hit at least once.

The pillars bounce around firing bullets from the base of the statue in various directions, leaving you with some expert dodge rolling to do if you want to avoid damage. Then, when they all cluster together in the center of the room, you have to get in close to avoid the encircling bullets, all the while being mindful of even more projectiles coming at you from the bosses.

No question, the Kill Pillars are one of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses, and you’re a better player than me if you figured out how to consistently beat them AND get the Master Round.

Cannonbalrog – Gungeon Boss

Some Gungeon players find Cannonbalrog to be one of the easiest bosses in the game, I’m not one of those people. Granted, it’s fairly easy to dodge out of the way of most of the projectiles, but one it does the pinball attack, I know I’m probably at a 50/50 chance of taking some damage.

I’m also not particularly keen on Cannonbalrog’s tendency to disappear into the darkness and fire bullets from unknown spots. That’s unsettling to say the least. Yet, despite being one of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses, you still have a good chance of making it to the next chamber, it’s just that (in my case at least) you may not be taking a Master Chamber with you.

Door Lord – Gungeon Boss

The Door Lord was actually one of the first bosses I encountered in the Gungeon, and I was under the impression that it would be a regular battle that I’d have to get used to. I was pleased to discover that it is, in fact, one of the rarest bosses in the game, with a 1.33% chance of spawning in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th chambers.

It’s rarity also adds to the difficulty. If you’re not familiar with the attack patterns, you’re likely to take damage. The burning laser attack always seems to catch me out. Blanks will be your best friend in this fight.

Mine Flayer – Gungeon Boss

Mine Flayer. Oh boy, this boss is easily one of my least favorites to see in the 4th chamber and, indeed, in the entire game. Spawning multiple mines at once and fast bullet spraying at the same time make Mine Flayer a really tough boss to beat flawlessly.

There are tricks to beating this boss, though, such as moving slightly clockwise during each wave of spiral bullets, and focusing on defense when the mines spawn. Even with that in mind, though, it’s still one of the hardest Gungeon bosses, and one which will make you roll your eyes more often than not when you see it.

The Lich – Gungeon Boss

Defeating the Lich is definitely doable, but the mere fact that it is practically 3 bosses in 1 makes it one of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses. Don’t believe the people that tell you the Lich is easy.

Granted, you may be able to identify and learn the patterns of the attacks better than some of the other bosses, but it still requires tremendous skill to be able to secure the victory, let alone a flawless one. You should be okay on phase one of the boss, but the other two – oh boy. Phase two of the Lich is particularly hard. Expect randomly scattered bullets coming at you from all angles, and be prepared to use a blank when he pounds the battle arena with both hands.

High Priest – Gungeon Boss

Has anyone ever enjoyed a battle with the High Priest? I think not. This is a real headache of a fight. The randomness of the bullets spawned is a particular problem in this fight. In fact, I’d even go as far as to suggest that, without a handful of blanks in your possession, it is nearly impossible to defeat High Priest without taking damage, unless you have an unbelievably overpowered run.

Let’s not even get started on the random wall bullets and the High Priest’s tendency to become invisible at sporadic intervals. This is a tough boss, for sure, the only thing that makes it worthwhile is looking forward to that rewarding feeling after you defeat him.

Resourceful Rat Punch Out Phase

After all the Ammo, Armor, Items, and Guns that the Resourceful Rat has stolen from Gungeon dwellers in the past, you’d think that coming up against with the chance to settle old scores would be a joy. It’s anything but, though.

You should be okay in the first phase and you may even say it is easy once you learn the attack patterns. The second phase is where things start to get hard, though, and if you’re not on top of your game, you can easily lose the run here.

If you do get through this, though, you have to deal with the third phase of the resourceful rat. This Punch Out phase is so unlike any of the other stages that it can take time to get used to. The trouble is, you don’t get any, and if you don’t adjust in time, it will quickly be game over. This is surely one of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses of all.

The Old King Gungeon Boss

The Old King is incredibly hard, so much so that many a Gungeon player believes that the boss should be redesigned to make it more realistically beatable and not so OP. I’m partially in that camp, too. The Old King is really, really difficult, and I’m not embarrassed to admit that I’ve died at his hands more times than I’ve triumphed.

The Old King just has so much HP. You can go in there with all the firepower in the world, but your best efforts just seem to tickle him a little. This is a boss that requires patience, so if you’re running short of some during your run, perhaps skip the Abbey this time.

Advanced Dragun – is this one of the most difficult Enter the Gungeon bosses?

With the Advanced Dragun, you get the impression that the devs really don’t want you to beat the game. You need to have great guns and items if you’re going to win this fight, going in with subpar equipment will undoubtedly lead to your death. Make sure to have plenty of blanks if you can, too.

I wish I could give you some tips for Advanced Dragun, but as with most boss guides you’ll read about the fight, the truth is that you just need a bucket load of luck from the item pool to give you an OP run. If you’ve got as far as this, skill isn’t the problem, but your equipment can be. There’s no question that Advanced Dragun is one of the hardest Enter the Gungeon bosses.

The 10 Best Enter the Gungeon Synergies https://blogofgames.com/the-10-best-enter-the-gungeon-synergies/ Thu, 18 Feb 2021 13:52:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=231 Part of what makes roguelikes so fun is the synergy potential that comes with combining different items in the game. This is particularly true of Enter the Gungeon, and with so many weapons and passive items to choose from, the synergies can get pretty crazy.

Read on for the 10 best Enter the Gungeon synergies.

10. Double Down (Gunboots + Springheel Boots)

Double Down Synergy

If you like to do damage without even using a weapon, Double Down might be the best Enter the Gungeon synergy for you.

In short, Double Down cancels the cooldown period for the Gunboots, meaning that you will fire bullets every time you perform a roll. It’s quite a fun synergy to play around with, but it’s not going to win you the run by itself.

9. Particle Accelerator (Particulator + Laser Sight)

Particle Accelerator Synergy

The Particle Accelerator is cool looking synergy that fires extra lasers every time the smaller bullets from the Particulator hit an object or enemy. The lasers are fired in the direction of the object that the small bullets hit.

This is a great boss killer, so if you happen upon this synergy, try and save it for the end of a chamber if you don;t have much else going for you in the run.

8. Knight Time (Ballistic Boots + Gunknight Greaves)

The Cormorant – Gungeon Transformation

Knight Time is another boot-related Gungeon synergy, and a good one at that. Knight Time will stop time whenever you take damage, making it a great defensie synergy to add to your arsenal.

If you throw Springheel Boots into the mix, you’ll get a third roll to help you out too.The Gunknight Greaves also take you one step closer to the elusive Cormorant transformation.

7. Jolly Roger (Skull Splitter + VertebraeK-47)

Jolly Roger Synergy

Jolly Roger is a powerful synergy that fires three linked skull shots towards enemies and has the potential to freeze them.

As you can imagine, this synergy is overpowered and can clear rooms with the blink of an eye. It’s also one of the most fun synergies in the game. I mean, who doesn’t like watching multiple skulls melt foe into complete nothingness? You’ll have fun with this one.

6. Meltdown (Big Boy + Gamma Ray)

Meltdown Synergy

The combination of Big Boy and Gamma Ray causes the Gamma Ray’s beam to split into 5 beams, widening your potential for damage. Not only is this combo ridiculously fun, but it is without a doubt one of the best synergies in Enter the Gungeon.

Using the Big Boy also replenishes the Gamma Ray’s ammo by 100, but this only works if you are holding it at the time.

5. Ice Water (Snowballer + Mega Douser)

Ice Water Synergy

The Mega Douser is already one of the funnest guns to play with in Gungeon, but did you know that when you combine it with Snowballer, the gun becomes 30% more powerful and freezes enemies?

It’s true, this is a powerful Gungeon combination, and if you happen to come across Bouncy Bullets on the same run, this could easily be higher in this list of the best Enter the Gungeon synergies.

Related: Enter the Gungeon Altar is Empty

4. King Bomber (Lil’ Bomber + Others)

King Bomber Synergy

You’re gonna be rich if you find this synergy, and it easily has the potential to become OP. King Bomber is a synergy that is made up of Lil’ Bomber and Coin Crown, Crown of Guns, or Gilded Bullets.

In short, Lil’ Bomber will now fire gold bombs which spawn Shells upon exploding. If you like to take advantage of the shops, then this will be one of the best Enter the Gungeon synergies for you.

3. Great Queen Ant (Gungeon Ant + Others)

Great Queen Ant Synergy

The Great Queen Ant synergy is formed when you combine the Gungeon Ant with Coin Crown, Crown of Guns, Gilded Bullets, Heck Blaster, or Ring of Fire Resistance.

For me, this is one of the coolest synergies as the Gungeon Ant becomes a queen ant and proceeds to fire rocket ants at enemies. The result? Utter chaos and one of the most powerful guns in the game that will melt enemies into oblivion.

Related: What does the Prime Primer do in Enter the Gungeon?

2. Akey Breaky (AKEY-47 + Shelleton Key)

Akey Breaky Synergy

The AKEY-47 is already up there with the best items in the game, but when you combine it with the Shelleton Key, the synergy it creates is devastating.

When you have the Akey Breaky synergy, every time you fire with the AKEY-47 you get a +10 damage boost per bullet. What’s even better is that you get infinite ammo so can fire away with reckless abandon.

Unfortunately, the synergized gun doesn’t open locks by shooting at them anymore, but that still doesn’t stop Akey Breaky being one of the best Enter the Gungeon synergies.

1. Betrayer’s Lies (Betrayer’s Shield + Lies)

Betrayer’s Lies Synergy

If you asked the average Gungeon player what the best Enter the Gungeon synergies are, you’d probably find Betrayer’s Lies at the top of the pile 9 times out of 10.

When you find this combo, Betrayer’s Shield gets a much larger magazine, infinite ammo, and increased fire rate and accuracy. When you combine the offensive boost to the defense that the shield provides, you’re in for a good time.

As you can imagine, this is particularly OP and it’s pretty much game, set and match if you find this gungeon synergy.
