Fortunately, though, the developers (Hello Games) didn’t abandon the project and No Man’s Sky has seen numerous updates and patches over recent years.

Now, No Man’s Sky can confidently claim to be one of the best games available for the PS4, and with the addition of virtual reality capabilities, the game’s pull increased tenfold. Indeed, it seems VR gaming was designed for a title like No Man’s Sky – what could be better than navigating an entire universe full of umpteen quintillion planets for your perusal. In this article, we look at why the game is so good in virtual reality. Read on for our no Mans Sky VR review

Background

no-mans-sky-starship-1645939 No Man’s Sky Starship

The premise of the game sounds ridiculously ambitious, and there was a time when that ambition seemed to be too overbearing for the capabilities of a video game. all games start the same for each player, you start on a planet in which you must traverse in order to find resources to repair your Starship.

The crazy thing is, though, that all players will have a different experience completing these initial missions – each game starts on an entirely new unique planet within the procedurally generated universe of No Man’s Sky. Additionally, each planet has its own unique landscape, flora and fauna. Once you’ve explored your current planet, simply jump in your starship and hyperspace travel to the next – your experience will be different.

No Man’s Sky Story

no-mans-sky-vr-deep-sea-exploration-2687636 No Man’s Sky VR Deep Sea Exploration

Although the game is largely made up of exploration, colonisation, and intergalactic travel, there is a storyline which guides the main narrative. You play as a character simply known as “the Traveller”, who wakes up on an unknown planet with no recollection of how you got there.

After locating your starship you must travel to another planetary system. Things get tricky, though, when you encounter three different alien species – the Gek, the Vy’keen, and the Korvax. These species inhabit the Galaxy and all of them have different backgrounds and ideas as to how they think the universe should be utilized and navigated.

The protagonist also has a desire to reach the centre of the Galaxy, being drawn there by an unknown presence that compels the Traveller to delve deeper. A number of alien NPCs are encountered along the way, each providing new information about what to expect at the centre of the Galaxy. Ultimately, you learn that there is a strange being at the centre, and you are guided towards it via a black hole.

Without spoiling the rest of the story, it should be known that there is an intriguing plot line that nicely supplements the main exploration element of the gameplay, and it is well worth completing the main missions of No Man’s Sky to find out the Traveller’s journey.

VR Gameplay

no-mans-sky-terrain-manipulation-4839491 No Man’s Sky Terrain Manipulation

Travelling through an entire universe with a virtual reality headset provides a level of immersion that few games are able to provide. It would be easy to get a game of this scale so wrong, but the VR element of No Man’s Sky is executed to perfection.

One particular improvement that VR provides in the game is to the user interface navigation. On a regular console or PC, you have to continuously switch the screen to bring up the resources and other utility menus that you need to advance in the game. With the VR headset, however, this is cleverly worked into a holographic UI system that requires the player to point at the options they want to select in front of them, without changing the screen. It feels realistic in a futuristic sense and does wonders for maintaining the immersion. This may require some getting used to at first, but once you become more adept in navigating the system, it really adds to the fluidity of the gameplay.

If there’s one problem with the VR gameplay in No Man’s Sky, it’s that it’s too immersive. you can easily get lost inside the world and forget about reality for a while, and although some may say this level of escapism is a good thing (particularly in 2020…), it’s easy to get disoriented and discombobulated upon leaving the headset. For this reason, recommend taking regular breaks when playing the game.

Every aspect of the game was modified for the VR adaptation of moment Sky, from driving starships or moon buggies, to mining resources and manipulating the terrain. In fact, what could sometimes feel like monotonous tasks become much more enjoyable and hands-on tasks when you are carrying out the movements yourself through the VR headset.

The VR control options in No Man’s Sky are fairly typical of games in the genre. You have the option of switching between snap and smooth turning modes, you can enable or disable the VR vignette, and you can alter various other movement options.

Roundup

no-mans-sky-vr-starship-travel-6808809 No Man’s Sky VR – Starship Travel

No Man’s Sky VR feels like a completely different game to what was found in the original non-VR release. It’s different in a good way, though. There are still some issues (most notably with frame rates), but on the whole, the game delivers an incredible virtual reality experience and is a must-buy for fans of VR gaming.

As with most games, when you shine a light on specific aspects of No Man’s Sky VR, blemishes and flaws will become apparent, but this is more than outset by the level of immersion and incredible escapability that multi-planetary hopping within a video game provides. For anyone on the fence in this game, we suggest that you don’t err on the side caution and give it a go as soon as possible.

The Best PSVR Bundles https://blogofgames.com/the-best-psvr-bundles/ Mon, 25 May 2020 13:30:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=306 If you’re looking to purchase a PSVR headset, you are probably also looking for some games to play along with it. Since the release of the PlayStation VR in 2016, there have been many bundle deals available to purchase – some worth it, some not so much. Here is a list of some the best PSVR bundles available to users right now.

The Best Value – PlayStation VR FPS Deluxe Bundle

Although this is not our top choice bundle on the list, it is probably the best value of all the PlayStation VR bundles available at the moment. It is so because it includes 4 great games, including probably the best virtual reality game available right now – Skyrim VR.

Farpoint VR

What’s included?

This bundle includes a PlayStation VR headset, a PlayStation Camera, 2 PlayStation Move controllers and a PSV aim controller, Doom VFR, PSVR Bravo Team, PSVR Farpoint, and Skyrim VR.

Pros

The games in this bundle are high-quality virtual reality experiences, each offering a unique take on the first-person shooter genre. PSVR Farpoint takes you on an otherworldly space adventure to a hostile planet, PSVR Doom provides more of a frantic shooter experience with plentiful carnage and a fair few jump scares, PSVR Bravo Team is a more modern and politicized affair set in an Eastern European city.

On top of this you also have Skyrim VR, and for those familiar with the game already it needs no introduction. For those unfamiliar with it, you need to introduce yourself to it.

Cons

If you are not a fan of first-person shooter (FPS) games, this bundle effectively leaves you with only one game choice in the form of Skyrim VR, in which case you would be better off electing for the bundle listed below.

Our Top Choice – PlayStation VR Skyrim Bundle

In our opinion, one of the best PSVR bundles available right now is also the cheapest one. It is also the one with the least games included (just one, in fact), but it is the best PlayStation VR game available right now and will keep you going for a long time while you decide what other games you want to try in the virtual reality world.

Skyrim VR

What’s included?

The bundle includes the PlayStation VR headset, two PlayStation Move controllers, a PlayStation Camera, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR game

Pros

Although the Skyrim may not be the most graphically advanced game available for the PSVR, it is definitely the most immersive and true virtual reality experience available. It has the potential provide over one hundred hours of gaming and the gameplay never seems to get old – testimony to this is found in its still strong sales results, despite having originally been released in 2011.

You can read and watch more on Skyrim VR in our list of VR Open World Games.

Cons

With the bundle offering only 1 game, it is not the most diverse package available, and those looking to try different genres in virtual reality should look elsewhere on the list.

The Most Diverse – PlayStation VR Starter Bundle (10 Items)

This bundle has a little something for all gamers and is probably the most diverse PSVR bundle available right now for a reasonable price. Fans of horror games can be happy with the inclusion of Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, if action-adventure games are your thing then Batman Arkham Asylum is available to you, Driveclub is also there to satisfy fans of racing games.

Eagle Flight PSVR

What’s included?

PlayStation 4 console, PlayStation VR headset, HDMI cable, PlayStation Camera, 2 PlayStation Move controllers, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, PSVR Eagle: Flight, Batman Arkham VR, PSVR Battle Zone, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PSVR Rigs: Mechanized Combat League, DriveClub VR, PSVR EVE: Valkyrie, Battlezone VR

Pros

When you consider that the PS4 and PlayStation VR bundle without games is only $30 cheaper than this one (at time of writing), it really is great value for money. The games in this bundle are all solid titles and provide a good introduction to both virtual reality gaming and standard console gaming. Additionally, this bundle comes with all the PSVR equipment necessary to make the most of virtual reality gaming.

Cons

The price may put some people off purchasing this bundle and, although the games are all good, some of the titles included are a little dated now.

All Out – Deluxe PS4 VR Star Wars Bundle (16 Items)

If you have both time and money in abundance, then you may want to go straight in for this Deluxe PS4 Star Wars Bundle. As with the starter bundle listed above in the list, this one is very diverse and has something for lovers of all gaming genres. This one, however, also includes a PS4 Pro, the upgraded and more powerful version of the original PS4, and 12 games in total.

Resident Evil 7 VR

What’s included?

1TB PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR headset, HDMI cable, PlayStation Camera, 2 PlayStation Move controllers, Star Wars Battlefront II, Batman Arkham VR, Doom VFR, EVE: Valkyrie VR, Until Dawn VR, Skyrim VR, Gran Turismo VR, PSVR Worlds, Resident Evil 7 VR, DriveClub VR, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League VR, Battle Zone VR, Eagle Flight VR.

Pros

This is certainly the most complete bundle in the list and has all the best titles currently available on the PSVR, in our opinion. The inclusion of Skyrim VR, Resident Evil 7 VR, and Doom VFR make the game choice in this bundle far superior to the starter bundle. This bundle also contains all the PSVR equipment to maximize the potential of the gameplay experience of the games listed.

Cons

Despite the value being very good considering what’s on offer, this bundle is simply too expensive. If you can afford it easily, then go for it, but we would recommend looking elsewhere at the cheaper bundles to get a feel for the PSVR before going all out with this one. Plus, by the time you have gotten through all the games listed in this bundle, it’s highly likely that better games will have been released in the meanwhile.

The 5 Most Realistic VR Games https://blogofgames.com/the-5-most-realistic-vr-games/ Sat, 09 May 2020 13:35:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=225 There is no better way to escape the hardships of everyday life than to jump into an alternate reality with the help of a VR headset. Virtual reality gaming has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years and the immersion that can be experienced in modern games is breathtaking.

Here we look at the most realistic VR games, choosing the titles that we think are the most enjoyable and had the most lifelike graphics. This list is subjective, and the games may not be for everyone. If not, let us know what your favorite virtual reality game is in the comment section below.

5. Boneworks

Boneworks Gameplay

Boneworks is a VR puzzle, first-person shooter, and action-adventure game that provides some of the most realistic physics interactions of any VR title. Initially released in December 2019, Boneworks was praised for its realism, aesthetics, and immersion.

Playing as Arthur Ford, players navigate the city of MythOS, which was developed by the company Monogon. The framework used to build the city is known as Boneworks, which is powered by AI and an unstable type of energy known as “void energy”.

This experimental physics adventure allows you to utilize objects and weapons in the environment in realistic ways, making it one of the most immersive VR games available right now. If gameplay is your main pull for an optimal virtual reality gaming experience, Boneworks is the right choice for you.

Not only is it one of the best Steam VR games, it is also one of the best VR games for Oculus. One of the main criticisms of the game, in fact, is that it is too realistic. Many gamers found that, strangely, the level of realism broke some of the immersion. That being said, this is a must try for fans of realistic VR experiences.

4. LA Noire: The VR Case Files

LA Noire VR Case Files Gameplay

LA Noire has been made available for a number of different platforms over the years, and it is now available for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR headsets.

The game, which features several cases from the original game, puts you in the shoes of Detective Cole Phelps as he attempts to solve difficult homicide cases.

One of the key features of LA Noire is the facial motion capture mechanics utilized to make the game more realistic than its contemporaries. This transposes excellently to VR headsets and creates a high level of immersion.

Playing LA Noire in first person may seem strange to the people who played the original game, but it is something that you soon get used to makes it one of the most immersive VR games available. Being able to inspect things from the first-person perspective makes solving the crimes more enjoyable, rewarding, and realistic.

Interrogating suspects is also taken to a new level in virtual reality. You can look carefully for tells in your suspect’s body language and see how they react to your questioning. Another great feature is the increased field of view when driving around the city.

If there is one drawback to the game, its that it’s too short. There are only 7 playable cases in the VR version of the game, as opposed around 20 in the original.

You can buy LA Noire: The VR Case Files on Steam.

3. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond

Medal of Honor Above and Beyond Gameplay

Adding Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond to this list feels a bit like cheating, as it hasn’t yet been released (it is due out at some point in 2020, though). Yet, the long-awaited return of this franchise deserves a place in this list if the gameplay footage is anything to go by.

From what we know so far, Medal of Honor VR looks set to be one of the most realistic VR games released to date, especially in the domain of war games. There is a lot of hype and expectation around this game, and it is easy to see why.

The game, which was developed by Respawn Entertainment, is set in Europe during the Second World War. The developers of Medal Honor VR have evidently made it a priority to make the game one of the most immersive VR games so far. In preparation for building the environments for the game, war veterans were flown to historic military locations and asked about what they witnessed and experienced there.

Like many upcoming VR games, this story-driven shooter is expecting some delays in release due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the Respawn developers are still optimistic of a 2020 release date. Read more about Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

2. Project CARS 2 VR

Project CARS 2 VR Gameplay

If you’ve found yourself wondering what the most realistic virtual reality game available right now is, you can’t go wrong with Project CARS 2. The racing genre lends itself perfectly to VR gaming, and this game showcases exactly why.

This much anticipated sequel to the 2015 Project CARS title is an upgrade to its predecessor and contains impressive and realistic visuals. The customization options in the game and there is a lot to get stuck into for newcomers.

The motorsport racing simulator has over 140 different track layouts, boasting almost 200 cars and 60 venues to select from. Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of the game is ever-changing dynamics of the race – each lap will change over the course of time, with the weather and track temperature affecting the race.

Despite being released back in 2017, Project CARS 2 stands the test of time very well and there aren’t many others that can hold a candle to it, particularly in the domain of VR racing simulators. If you’re looking for the most realist VR games on offer right now, you can’t go wrong with this game.

1.     Lone Echo

Lone Echo VR Gameplay

For those who haven’t heard of, or played, Lone Echo yet, you must. Lone Echo is not only one of the most immersive VR gaming experiences that you can have, but it is also a fantastic story with stunning graphics and an impressive gameplay design.

Set in 2126, you play as an AI housed in a mining facility outside the rings of Saturn called Khronos II. The programming of the playable Echo-1 AI character leads it to form a heartwarming and intriguing companionship with the only human aboard the space station, Captain Liv Rhodes.

You act as a taskmaster for Captain Liv, who sends you on various repair missions around Khronos II. Aside from this, though, Captain Liv also asks you for advice, which you are able to respond to as you see fit using your chosen dialogue response. This can lead to some funny, moving, and realistic responses from the character, and serves as a thought-provoking exercise into how the future may look.

As far as the gameplay is concerned, there are many cool attributes to Lone Echo that make it a unique VR experience. You can traverse the environment in zero-gravity, scan for radiation, and mend things with your blowtorch.

Despite playing as a robotic AI, the game feels surprisingly realistic. This is thanks to a combination of stunning visuals, an accurate physics engine, and believable interactions.

All in all, Lone Echo is a worthy purchase that will provide hours of entertainment. Fans of the game can also look forward to a 2020 release of Lone Echo II.

The 5 Best VR Open World Games https://blogofgames.com/the-5-best-vr-open-world-games/ Thu, 17 Oct 2019 13:36:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=226 If vast, sprawling and open landscapes are your forte, then you are living in a good age. It seems almost every month that we’re treated to a Triple A open world game from one of the major video game publishers.

Open world games have also been given a boost by the up and coming virtual reality genre. VR gaming offers a whole new level of immersion to open world environments that you just can’t get with regular consoles. Yet, options are few and far between, so we’ve compiled a list for you.  Here are the 5 best VR open world games available right now.

5. The Solus Project

The Solus Project is first-person survival exploration game with open world elements. It was released in 2016 by Teotl Studios and Grip Digital and is available for VR headsets on the PS4, X Box One, and PC.

The player takes on the role of an astronaut on a mission to save mankind after the Earth’s destruction. Whilst aboard a space ship nearing Pluto with the last of humanity’s survivors, you are sent to scout the planet of Gliese-6143-C as a potential place for inhabitation. The spaceship you disembarked from is destroyed as you approach the planet, however, leaving you isolated and without communication. It is here that you must explore the planet’s secrets and scavenge to survive in a foreign, otherworldly environment.

The campaign is thoroughly engaging and can keep you gripped for hours, with one exploration opening up questions that lead to the next. With a total play through time of roughly 15 hours, the length of play is generous by VR game standards, and that doesn’t include the hours spent exploring the vast open world. As is standard with survival games, the player must craft tools from resources found throughout the planet, eat and drink to sustain the character, and be mindful of thermoregulation so as to not succumb to the planet’s diverse weather system.

The graphics are crisp and smooth, and the barren planet has some impressively vibrant and colourful visuals. This adds a sense of otherworld immersion that has not been brought to many open world VR games so far. The extreme weather events that take place are a good example of how the game does well in this department, with meteor showers and tornadoes becoming grand spectacles through the eyes of a virtual reality headset.

If you enjoy exploring open world environments and solving puzzles in order to survive, The Solus Project is definitely for you. It is easy to get lost in the eerily uninhabited planet of Gliese-6143-C, and I recommend you do so, it is easily one of the best VR open world games available to play right now.

To find out more about the game, watch the video below.

4. Skyrim VR

Skyrim is one of the greatest games of all time and I could write entire articles on why it is such. For your sake, however, I won’t. For this review, I will focus on how well the gameplay crosses over to the virtual reality experience. Skyrim VR was initially released for PlayStation VR in late 2017, eventually becoming available for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in 2018, also.

The essence of the original game is still very much present in the virtual reality version – the expansive mountainous landscape, the characteristically enthralling Elder Scrolls lore, the magnificent Nordic beards, etc. The open world still has that epic and majestic feel that all comes together neatly, despite the slight drop in visual quality. The reduced graphics, which have been the source of most complaints, do not impact upon the game in a way that breaks the immersion. It is a very reasonable trade-off for the ability to witness dragons up close and personal and wield Ancient Nord Bow’s with your own two hands.

While the combat system is fun, if you are expecting to play this game for a top-notch fighting experience, you may want to look elsewhere. Aside from the impressive bow and arrow system, the combat is essentially a frenetic mess where you bonk enemies on the head with swords and axes to a largely unrealistic effect. Pausing the gameplay while accessing your favorites menu can also break the immersion and fluidity, but that should be expected for a game not specifically designed for VR.

Something worth mentioning are the mods available for the game. Skyrim VR has some pretty awesome mods that further enhance the enjoyment of the gameplay. One such mod, called the Dragonborn Speaks Naturally, enables the player to speak to non-player characters (NPCs) using their own voice, using voice recognition to activate a specific dialogue choice. Other mods improve in game textures, while others enhance the realism of water bodies – all of them serve to improve the immersion of the game.

If you are a fan of the original game for the console, then you should try not to compare this VR version as they offer two different experiences. When judged as a game in its own right, Skyrim VR is a more-than worthy addition to virtual reality genre and is a game you should certainly check out. It offers some fun exploration, high level open world immersion, and… well, and VR dragons!

I’m sure everyone here knows the gameplay of Skyrim by now, but watch the video below to see why it also has become one of the best VR open world games you can experience right now.

3. CyberThreat

CyberThreat is a first-person shooter game released in 2016 by game developer Enigmatic. It is available for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

The game takes place in an open world city in which aggressive robots have been let loose and threaten to take control. You play the role of an elite Cyber Threat Task Force veteran, who is enlisted to supress the threat of the rogue AI.

The story is largely irrelevant in CyberThreat, and the gameplay is the main selling point of this title. Within the game you are free to roam among the streets, rooftops, and buildings of an expansive 14 block urban battleground. There are multiple ways to traverse the cityscape – you can run, jump, climb, fly and, teleport. This provides heaps of fun, as the city becomes like your own personal parkour obstacle course.

The game is highly interactive and pretty much everything is destructible, including cars, building windows, and (of course) enemy robots. It is a fast-paced game at times, with AI coming at you thick and fast as you are forced to frantically keep them at bay.

Overall, CyberThreat is a decent game that has been very developed and runs smoothly, particularly considering its early release within the VR gaming timespan. You will especially like this game if you are a fan of FPS games, and this can serve as a good foundation for other games within the VR first-person shooter genre to build upon.

To find out more information, watch the video below.

2. Fallout 4 VR

Another Bethesda title makes it onto the list in the form of Fallout 4 VR, released in 2017 on the HTC Vive. Despite some harsh critics, this is one instance where, I believe, the VR experience enhances that of the original.

Everything that is in the original game, you can find in Fallout 4 VR too – apocalyptic wasteland, mutant bugs, quirky NPCs. Yet, in virtual reality, it all seems just that little bit more real. I think what makes the immersion in this game more epic in comparison to its Bethesda counterpart is that the premise is more believable. Admittedly, not much more, but we will sooner find ourselves roaming a world of toxic barren badlands than we will a world full of dragonborn nords and talking bipedal amphibious lizards (unfortunately).

The graphics transform to virtual reality mode almost identically, with no real noticeable differences. Due to the high-level specification requirements for this game on VR platforms, the textures are all high quality and the render distance is good in the sense that it’s not detectable. With a lot of the focus being on shooting in this game, it is important for the shooting experience to be decent, and it is. With the (much appreciated) addition of auto-aimed headshots, gunning down ghouls and pistol-whipping wolves has never felt so satisfying.

If you are big on character customization, wielding aesthetically optimised weapons and equipping badass armor, it is perhaps best to stick to the non-VR version, in all honesty. You won’t be able to see your character in third-person view as it would completely destroy the immersion and, thus, defeat the whole objective of virtual reality.

I think most of negative reviews levelled in the direction of Fallout 4 VR have, unfairly, been in comparison to the original console game. Through numerous patches, however, Bethesda have countered most of the issues that users were initially experiencing, and it has now become one of the frontrunners in the world of VR gaming. If you are new to the series, even better, this is a game that you simply must try, and what better way is there to do so than in a full-bodied virtual reality experience.

Watch the video below to see why many think that this game is one of the best VR open world games around right now.

1. Stormland

It’s hard to talk about the best VR open world games without mentioning Stormland. It is the most recent game on the list and is easily one of the best VR open world games available right now. The world is immersive, the visuals are stunning, and the gameplay (at least in my view) is one of the most user firendly experiences of all the top virtual reality games around today.

Stormland – is this one of the best open world VR games.

It’s a first-person action adventure game that explores a foregin planet whilst taking on the role of an android gardener. Long story short, you face up against an alien faction by the name of the Tempest, who have wreaked havoc on the planet.

The story is not so important though. Stormland is all about making the virtual reality experience a grand and immersive one, and it manages this with flying colors. It’s up there with Asgard Wrath as one the must play VR games of our time, but this has the added value of being open world.

Granted, the campaign is short in length, and it’s possible to get through the game in about 6-8 hours, but you really have to be rushing through the game for this to happen. Instead, it’s much better to take your time with Stormland. Absorb the atmosphere, have a look around the world, revel in its beauty and imperfections, and I’m sure you’ll soon agree that this is one of the best VR open world games to play in this day and age.

5 Best PlayStation VR Horror Games https://blogofgames.com/5-best-playstation-vr-horror-games/ Mon, 28 Jan 2019 15:25:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=432 Playing horror games in virtual reality is, in our opinion, the best way to play any game in the genre. Some great VR horror games have been released to the PlayStation VR headset in the past few years (check out our other list of some of the best VR horror games), but some not-so-great games have also been made available too.

To narrow down the choices for your next purchase, here at Blog of Games we have compiled a list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games for you.

5. Affected: The Manor VR

Affected: The Manor VR is a game abundant in jump scares and cheap thrills and is one of the most intense VR horror games available right now. This first-person survival horror game was developed by Fallen Planet Studios and is a title you’ll be sure to like if you’re a horror aficionado.

Affected – The Manor VR

The game provides stereotypical horror and doesn’t apologise for it – nor should it. In Affected: The Manor VR players make their way around a dimly lit haunted mansion akin to the live action horror walkthroughs that you can find at amusement parks. The experience is a similar one, too, yet even more terrifying.

There is only one way to go in Affected: The Manor VR and if you find a door unlocked, then you shouldn’t be there. There are no puzzles and you can’t die, which makes the immersion is fluid and constant. As with all VR horror experiences, lighting and audio play a big part in the atmosphere of the game, and this is something Fallen Planet Studios obviously put a lot of work into getting just right.

Affected: The Manor VR doesn’t offer much in terms of story and replay value, but that shouldn’t deter you if all you’re after is a feeling overwhelming fright at regular intervals, littered around a creepy haunted mansion. Somehow, the linear and uncomplicated gameplay allows you to focus on the scares the game provides, and there are plenty.

This is definitely one of the 5 best PlayStation VR games available right now, and you should not hesitate to try it out. This game will scare you.

4. The Inpatient VR

The Inpatient VR is a survival horror game released in 2018 by Supermassive Games, the same developers from Until Dawn. This game serves as a prequel to Until Dawn and is every bit as creepy and psychologically challenging.

The Inpatient VR Review

In The Inpatient VR, players take on the role of a patient at Blackwood Sanatorium, which is owned by the unnerving Dr Bragg. The protagonist wakes up with no memory of their past and struggles recall and understand why exactly they are situated in the asylum in the first place. What ensues is a psychological rollercoaster with some spine-chilling and thought-provoking scenes that all build up to an intense climax that will leave players in a state of pensive fear for days after completion.

The game plays out largely as an interactive cinematic experience in which player choices affect the outcome of the game. This adds great replay value to the game and there are multiple endings for players to achieve. Another great feature of The Inpatient VR is the voice activation command, whereby players can literally respond to character interactions by talking to their VR headsets to trigger their command.

All in all, the game is an intense horror experience with a great plotline to boot. This, coupled with some haunting visuals and aptly atmospheric audio, make The Inpatient VR one of the best PlayStation VR horror games available to play right now.

3. The Exorcist: Legion VR

The Exorcist: Legion VR is a virtual reality survival horror experience developed by Wolf & Wood, a developer who has not previously forayed into major triple-A titles, but has exclusively worked with VR experiences. This game was released as a complete package for the PSVR in 2018, having previously been available in staggered chapters on other VR headsets.

The Exorcist – Legion VR

In The Exorcist: Legion VR, players control a detective through the first-person perspective and explore different environments in order to solve the mystery of a different case in each chapter. In the first chapter, for example, the detective attempts to figure out the homicide of a priest at a church. Each chapter is unique and equally engaging.

The game is visually impressive, and the developers seemingly made a decision to favour a realistic approach to the graphics. This serves only to add to the immersion and, hence, the atmosphere of the game. The audio is correspondingly chilling, and this game evoked feelings of terror in a way like no other that I’d played before.

The Exorcist: Legion VR didn’t receive universal acclaim, however, and many users had gripes with the controls, the lack of storytelling, and limited environments in each chapter. Despite this, from a pure horror perspective, The Exorcist: Legion VR is a terrifying and immersive experience that has the ability to leave players motionless with fear. Because of this, we deem the game a worthy addition to this list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games.

2. Resident Evil 7 VR

As if the standard version of this game wasn’t scary enough. Resident Evil 7 VR transposes perfectly into the virtual reality world in a way that will make you question your motives to have ever entered the alternate horror dimension but will keep you coming back for more due to its sheer intensity.

Resident Evil 7 VR – Mia

Even if you have already played the standard version, Resident Evil 7 VR will multiply the terror and then add a little. You can’t hide behind the analogue sticks, you can’t look at the TV through interlaced fingers, Jack is coming for you full-throttle through your PSVR headset and there is absolutely nothing you can do to dampen the dread.

Resident Evil 7 VR can be both mentally and physically draining, but it’s totally worth it. As VR horror games go, this has a rich plotline that can provide around 12 hours of gameplay. Not only is the story a good length, but it’s also captivating and has some bizarre twists that will keep the game in your mind long after you’ve completed it.

The atmosphere is eerie, and the music is chilling. All aspects of this game are perfectly combined to create a truly great horror game experience, and this is certainly one of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games that you can play on your PSVR headsets right now. 1. Transference VR

Transference VR is a psychological horror game released in 2018 and developed in collaboration by Ubisoft Montreal and SpectreVision. The game has received numerous accolades, including the “Immersive Reality Game of the Year” (D.I.C.E. Awards) and “Best VR Game” (Golden Joystick Awards).

Transference VR – Raymond

Transference VR takes place within a corrupted simulation created by a maverick scientist named Raymond. The simulation is formed from the “brain data” of Raymond, his wife and his son. In the game, players enter the family home, which is littered with the collective memories of the family. Their stories are told through interactions with the environment throughout the game and it quickly becomes apparent that this family was struggling with some severe problems. It is the objective of the player to solve puzzles and piece together clues that will help repair the lives of Raymond’s family.

The story is the winning feature of Transference VR and living out the experience of what actually happened to the family becomes an intriguing, intense, and immersive rollercoaster that is captivating from start to finish. This immersion is complimented with high-quality production value, with crisp and realistic visuals and a haunting sound design that stands up to any other title in the genre.

Although Transference VR is not your typical horror title, it is psychologically intense and provides plenty of jump scares to satisfy the hardiest of horror aficionados. All in all, Transference VR is a brilliantly constructed VR horror game and is totally worthy of its top place on our list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games.

The Inpatient VR review –  The Story

the-inpatient-vr-review-1-1699183 The Inpatient VR Review

Developer: Supermassive Games

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR

The Inpatient VR is a psychological survival horror game released in 2018. It is a prequel to the 2015 game, Until Dawn, and it plays from the perspective of a patient at Blackwood Sanatorium.

The game begins with the protagonist waking up restrained in a wheelchair face-to-face with the intensely unnerving Dr Bragg, who is the owner of the Blackwood establishment. The character you play has no recollection of their past and struggles when trying to maintain a dialogue with the doctor about details of their memory.

Following this, you are transported back to your room thoroughly confused and with more questions unanswered than answered. Here, you get to become acquainted with your roommate, staff members, and daily routine. You can also search the room looking for clues that will aid you throughout the game.

This all comes to a halt, though, when the nurse doesn’t arrive for her daily visit one day and you are met with some rather horrifying screams and cries that appear to be coming from deep within the Blackwood Sanitorium. Without giving too much away, players of Until Dawn may be able to recognize the perpetrators of said noises.

When you finally get to leave your room and venture out into the asylum, The Inpatient then takes on more of a generic survival horror style gameplay, in which you wander around dimly lit corridors slaloming through numerous obstacles. From here on in, the game intensifies at a rapid pace, culminating in a truly spine-chilling finale that will probably stay with you for a while after completion.

The Inpatient VR – Gameplay

The Inpatient – Blackwood Sanitorium

The gameplay is a familiar for those who have played a Supermassive Games title before. The game is essentially a cinematic experience in which the player makes choices throughout the game that will have a measured impact on the outcome of the game.

The virtual reality aspect of the game increases the immersion of the experience greatly. When you are faced with questions and dialogue choices in a virtual reality first-person perspective, you can really start to believe you are in a virtual world. This is enhanced further by the option to activate voice recognition, whereby you can simply vocalise the dialogue option you wish to choose, and the game will automatically select the option for you.

The game is played with two PlayStation Move controllers that allow you to use the onscreen hands as if they were your own. This is a cool aspect of VR gaming that adds to the realistic value of any game and can make horror games just that little bit more chilling.

The visuals are smooth, and the audio is distressingly atmospheric. The game does a good job of creating tense environments for the player that can mess with sanity levels and leave you feeling both edgy and thoroughly focused, the perfect combination for an optimal horror experience.

It should be noted that those looking for a horror title heavily-laden with jumpscares may be left unfulfilled. This game uses them sparingly and instead takes a focus on a more psychological aspect of horror. I, for one, am completely for this approach.

The Inpatient VR– The Good

The Inpatient – Dr Bragg

A theme that is prevalent throughout the whole game is the deteriorating mental state of the protagonist as the game progresses. This portrayal of progressive insanity and mental deliriousness is both poignant and well executed.

Supermassive Games are one of the best developers for providing immersive video game experiences, which is largely down to their heavily choice-driven storytelling. Yet, this immersion is increased tenfold when transposed to a virtual reality experience. on that the game provides is aided by, the impact of your decisions.

A final plus in this The Inpatient VR review is that the game has great replay value. Indeed, it should do when the main story takes only around two hours to complete. The impact of your decisions really seem to affect the outcome of the ending in this survival horror game and, as such, means you can return to the game multiple times to see how each decision pans out in the end.

The Inpatient VR – The Bad

The Inpatient – Roommate

Although I fully enjoyed this survival horror experience, I can also see how the game attracted a fair amount of criticism after its release, and there are many who will not agree with the tone of this The Inpatient VR review.

Perhaps the most obvious downside to the game is the story length. It can certainly feel like a disservice to the buyer when you can complete the entire game in around two hours. This is slightly mitigated by the high potential for replays, but I still think the game could have been made into a longer experience by the developers.

Other users have reported problems with clunky controls and a voice command system that doesn’t function properly. I, personally, didn’t experience any of these technical difficulties whilst playing the game, but the complaints from other gamers have been frequent enough to make them worth mentioning.

Games Like The Inpatient VR

If you enjoyed this title and are looking for something similar, don’t worry, there are plenty of titles out there. Here are some games like The Inpatient VR that you might enjoy.

5. Google Earth VR

If you’re looking for a highly immersive virtual reality experience, you can’t do much better than Google Earth VR. This casual exploration game is exactly what you expect, Google Earth transposed for a virtual reality experience. The concept is simple, and the fun is endless.

Google Earth VR – Eiffel Tower

Have you ever wanted to visit the Grand Canyon? The streets of Tokyo? The cliffs of Cinque Terre? Well, with Google Earth VR you can. Not only can you simply visit them, you can soar over them whilst pretending that you’re flying a futuristic jetpack – yes, it sounds silly, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

The whole world is literally in your hands with this free virtual reality game, and you can spend many nostalgic hours visiting places that you’ve once been to, or places where you once lived. A recent update to the game now makes Google Street View possible, meaning you can literally walk to your house from within your house.

Of all the games on this list of the 5 best free VR games, this is the one I’ve played the most. 4. The Lab VR

The Lab VR is a game that you want to show people when introducing them to virtual reality gaming – it’s fun, family friendly, and diverse. With a release in mid-2016, it is one of the earlier VR games to be released, but this game from Valve has stood the test of time rather well.

The Lab VR – Robot Companion

The game is set in the Portal universe and includes eight different games that each enable the user to experience different virtual reality capabilities. The games included in The Lab VR range from archery, human medical scans, repairing robots, and educational space jumps in the solar system. There are plenty more games, too, all of them unique with their own perks and gameplay value.

Perhaps the best mini-game is Xortex, which involves using a spaceship with the motion controllers to avoid incoming projectiles and slalom through obstacles in a virtual space world. Your spaceship can also fire back at enemies to diffuse any inbound danger.

The Lab VR is a virtual reality classic and is certainly one of the best free VR games available right now. If you haven’t tried it already, you should. Follow the link to find the free game download.

The combat in The Ranger: Lost Tribe ranges from the typical virtual reality-friendly hack-and-slash to stealthily executed ranged and dismembering attacks – all are equally satisfying. Different weapons are available to the player and there is an option

Graphically, the game is colorful and has smooth textures. It won’t blow you away visually, but it is more than suffice for the gameplay to be enjoyable. The game also has a huge area to explore and there are various locomotive options available to traverse the land.

Overall, this game is great fun and it’s hard to believe that it is available at no cost. For certain, it is worthy of a place in this list of the 5 best free VR games and you can download The Ranger: Lost Tribe for free by following this link to the Steam store.

2. The Red Stare

The apartment room in which you are based provides you lookout location, and from here you receive faxes and phone calls from your superior, which unravels hints and clues about the case that you must observe carefully to complete the mission and successfully suppress The Reds.

5 of the Best VR Horror Games https://blogofgames.com/5-of-the-best-vr-horror-games/ Tue, 16 Oct 2018 14:49:00 +0000 https://blogofgames.com/?p=397 Normally when playing a horror game, if it gets too much you can just turn your head away or look at the ensuing terror through the gaps in your fingers. Not in virtual reality. There is no escaping. And there is something about this pulsating intensity that makes me absolutely LOVE this virtual reality genre.

So, we’ve created a list of some of the best VR horror games available right now. Read on to find out more.

5. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

For anyone who played the original Until Dawn for the PS4, there is no question whether you will enjoy this virtual reality game for the PSVR. Released in October 2016, it is a direct spin-off from the original PS4 title, and features a horror-themed roller coaster that the player rides on via first-person perspective, providing a truly bracing and terrifying VR experience.

Players find themselves in a carnival amusement park and must shoot at animate and inanimate foes, with the game increasing in difficulty and intensity as it progresses. There are several roller coasters available to play throughout the game, each providing its unique thrills and jump-scares. If you have played the original title by Supermassive Games, then you will recognize some of the locations and characters encountered throughout the journey, but this is not essential to the gameplay if you are new to the franchise.

One thing worth noting is that this game was built directly for a virtual reality experience, and the scares and gameplay are designed as such to optimize the gameplay for VR users. This is really evident in the way the game plays out and, without giving too much away, you’ll be forced to face your fears in order to progress through the game. Looking in the direction that all your intuitions tell you not to look, is most likely the way to go!

If you want to find out more about this game and see first-hand why we think it is one of the best VR horror games around, check out the video below.

4. Emily Wants to Play

Without a doubt, Emily Wants to Play is one of the best VR horror games you can play right now. This game is a survival horror title available on the PC, Oculus Rift, PS4 and Xbox One. In this game, the virtual reality gamer takes on the role of a pizza delivery guy who is taking a pizza to a house containing a young girl named Emily, the main source of everything terrifying in this game.

Once you are inside the house, you are free to explore it freely and look for hints and clues throughout. The game takes place over a period of 7 hours – from 11pm til 6am – and each hour of the game represents a new level, with new clues and opportunities. The main puzzle the player encounters is how to interact with Emily’s dolls. If the player fails to interact correctly with said toys, they will soon find out via the form of a rather unforgiving jump-scare, and then the player must restart the level (or hour).

All the expected horror game elements are present in this game – doors conveniently lock behind you, lights go out in timely fashion, did you or did you not just see a creepy girl flash upon the screen? Yet, everything is done in such a simplistic and masterful fashion that, before you know it, you are completely immersed into the house’s disconcertingly calm environment, and you forget about all of your mitigation strategies for previous horror game scare tactics.

This all adds up to a rather frightening virtual reality horror experience and – although the game is not too long – it is certainly one worth checking out if you’re a fan of this genre. If you want to find out more, check out the links and the video below.

3. Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul

There is a general consensus that the Paranormal Activity movie franchise has been getting progressively weaker since its first instalment was brought to cinema screens in 2007, but this VR horror game, released by VRWerx, injects a welcome lease of life into the series.

The first thing to note is how impressive the visuals are, and this sense of realism creates a thoroughly tense atmosphere. Add to this the game’s adaptive scare system and you’ll find the logical part of your being pleading with you to take off the VR headset. The adaptive system means that objects are randomly placed throughout the house as you explore it, meaning that each player can have a unique experience with the game. This also means you can play through the whole game more than once and have completely different encounters, which is great given that the length of the game is relatively short.

The game involves a lot of exploration and navigating your way through the house to search for relevant items in draws, cupboards, and the like. It is whilst you’re exploring that you will really get a sense of the game’s atmosphere and tension. Players can interact with an impressive amount of items within the house, and this can leave you on edge as you never know which objects will have significance to the game as you roam around the large, open space.

There has been some criticism aimed at the control system for the game, but it is worth noting that there are several movement variants to choose from in the options menu. Here you can test which movement setting is best for you before proceeding.

Overall, Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul is a very complete VR horror experience and one which provides a strong sense of immersion and, with it, dread. This is one of the genres better options, and we strongly recommend that you try this out.

Check out the gameplay below to see why people consider this one of the best VR horror games around right now.

2. Face Your Fears

Released in 2016, Face Your Fears is a throroughly creepy game that kind of slipped through the radar. It’s surprising that it hasn’t had more attention, as it is easily one of the best VR horror games available.

Available on Gear VR for free, this game will pit you against robots, ghosts, and everything in between as you have try to and face up to the most horrifying scenarios you can imagine. One of the main appeals about Face Your Fears is that it is incredibly fun, especially for a horror game. You can multiply the fun tenfold if you’re playing with friends, too.

There’s no doubt about it, this game developed by Turtle Rock Studios is one of the best VR horror games on any platform. Watch the video below for confirmation.

1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard VR

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard transposes brilliantly to the VR experience. This game is probably the most complete on the list – it has a compelling story, an eerily captivating atmosphere, and some rather chilling music. All of these attributes combine to make this, in our view, the best virtual reality horror game out there.

If you’ve played the standard version, you will already know how brutally terrifying this game is. Yet, in the PSVR version, that terror is multiplied tenfold. Here, there is no escaping behind the comfort of your analogue sticks, using your thumbs to move around corners to check for the presence of the annoyingly unpredictable Jack. No, here in the virtual reality version, you must physically crane your neck around these obstacles to peer into the dark void. This is one instance where practice does not make perfect. In fact, quite the opposite, it seemingly gets more difficult.

The storyline can last a good 12+ hours, making it comparatively longer than any of the other games in this list. Because of this, it is recommended that you remember to take breaks at regular intervals to avoid any VR sickness. This shouldn’t be a problem with this game, though. This game becomes like physical exercise at times, and it almost enforces the player to take involuntary breaks, if only just to break from the exhaustion of consistently tensing up and writhing through the seemingly endless hauntings.

This survival horror game is one that others should aspire to be like, and one which you MUST try if you are a horror game aficionado. You can see why this is one of the best VR horror games in the video below.

Skyrim VR Gameplay

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was originally released on November 11, 2011, and instantly caught the world by storm. People loved the game so much that it is not unusual to find people playing it today. The VR version of the game does not change the story. The game is set 200 years after the events in Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV). The story revolves around your character and their quest to take down Alduin the World-Eater, a mystical dragon that is prophesied to end the world.

Pros

  • The VR vision of Skyrim is very immersive. This would be an absolute delight to anyone who played the first installments.
  • The movement system supports either teleportation or free movement. This is good as teleportation breaks the immersion.
  • The controls are realistic and immersive. Also, you can customize the controls to what best fits your play style.

  Cons

  • The free movement option is not for inexperienced VR players due to the motion sickness involved.

Developer: Crytek

Robinson The Journey VR Review

The story follows young Robin on an adventure after his ship, the Esmeralda, crashes on a paradise planet called Tyson III. However, Tyson III is not the paradise it seems when he comes face to face with a dinosaur. Robin has to rely on nothing but his wits and companions to survive. This VR game is beautiful. It immerses you in a mysterious world with the power of virtual reality.

Pros

  • Its graphics are very impressive. Everything feels so real like its living and breathing. The game is so immersive you could finish it in one sitting.
  • The storytelling aspect is also on point. For instance, when the game starts you have a chance to look at Robin’s makeshift home and it looks like he is lonely.

          Cons

  • The game’s puzzles can be very brutal. They are often unclear and hard to solve.

Developer: Impulse Gear

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Platform: PS4

Year of release: May 16, 2017

Farpoint VR Gameplay

Farpoint follows a lone astronaut just crash-landed on an alien planet. At first glance, the planet seems uninhabited. However, the astronaut soon finds out that the planet is full of aliens who have a taste for human flesh. The astronaut then has to fight their way to the crashed space station so they can get out. This game has been praised as the most user-friendly to new VR players. The game takes into account the limitations of VR. This saves it from looking like a proof of concept or tech demo. Besides, it supports the new PlayStation VR Aim Controller for added immersion.

Pros

  • It is user-friendly to new VR players. It is very forgiving when it comes to motion sickness.
  • It supports coop play. It is always fun to play with a friend
  • The shooting aspect is also enjoyable. The sights on the guns are very responsive and easy to use.

Cons

  • The campaign feels too short.

Developer: Polyarc

Publisher: Polyarc

Moss VR Gameplay

In Moss, you play as a reader who found an old book in a library. As you go through the pages you are transported to a mystical fantasy land within the book. There you meet a young mouse called Quill. An evil fire-breathing snake, Sarffog, has taken over the kingdom and captures Quill’s uncle. You then have to guide Quill on a quest to defeat Sarffog and save his uncle.

Pros

  • It has a creative storytelling aspect. This leaves you wanting more even when you are done with the game
  • The scale aspect is fantastic. Quill looks like a tiny mouse. This increases the immersion aspect.

         Cons

  • There are some technical issues. One will often have to reset the calibration.

Developer: Insomniac Game

Publisher: Oculus Studios

Year of release: June 6, 2016

Platform: Microsoft Windows

Edge of Nowhere VR Review

You play as the protagonist, Victor Howard who is searching for his wife who went missing in an expedition in Antarctica. However, things soon take a turn for the worst when the rescue plane crashes leaving you alone. Unfazed, Victor continues to look for his wife venturing deeper into a monstrous environment. Moreover, Victor is also experiencing some flashbacks that have him questioning reality itself. The main feature Edge of Nowhere is that it is a third-person view VR game. Nevertheless, it does not sacrifice much when it comes to gameplay or immersion.

Pros

  • The story is well written. The use of flashbacks to advance the narrative is creative.
  • The action is also placed very well. The constant need to keep moving while fighting for your life is one of the best aspects of this VR game.

Cons

  • Some elements in the game are not very clear up close.

Developer: Double Fine, React Games

Publisher: Double Fine

Year of release: March 2017

Platform: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin VR Gameplay

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is a good story that bridges the gap between the first Psychonauts produced in 2005 and the upcoming sequel. The story reunites Raz, Milla, Lili, and Sasha after they graduate the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. This VR sandbox games takes an awesome approach with the teleportation movement mechanics. Raz, the protagonist, makes use of his Clairvoyance ability to move from person to person through mental projection. This is a smart way to find and solve puzzles without having the discomfort of motion sickness.

Pros

  • It smartly counters motion sickness by the use of Clairvoyance ability to move around.
  • It has a good story as it was written by Tim Schafer who is a great adventure game designer.

Cons

  • It is too short and it is not repayable.

Developer: Rocksteady Studios
